Subtraction is nothing but reducing or removing something from something else. Children often find it hard to grasp the concept of subtraction. While teaching your kindergarteners how to subtract, it can be helpful to present the concept using different techniques.
See the fact file below for more information on the Subtracting Numbers or alternatively, you can download our 32-page Subtracting Numbers worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
TEACHING SUBTRACTION WITH DRAWINGS OR OBJECTS
- Present your students with a subtraction chant or subtraction story.
- Give your students three (3) colored stickers and cross out a certain number to make a simple subtraction problem.
- Present a subtraction word problem and explain the problem with a drawing.
- Draw 8 bananas on the board or on a sheet of paper. Ask your kindergarteners to count the bananas and label each banana with a number. As you explain that Marcel the monkey ate 3 bananas, cross out or erase 3 bananas, and then ask them how many bananas are left.
- Explain the problem with objects. Show a monkey puppet and place 8 bananas on the table and ask your kindergarteners to count the bananas. Hide 3 bananas from the table, explaining that Marcel the monkey already ate the bananas. Ask the kids to count the number of bananas left on the table.
- When using objects, replace the items you use so students can learn that math rules are universal. For instance, work through a problem using bananas, then do it again with balls.
- Write a number sentence. Discuss with your pupils that you can represent this word problem with a number sentence. Guide them through the process of translating the word problem into a number sentence.
TEACHING COUNT-BACK SUBTRACTION WITH A NUMBER LINE
- Present your students with a subtraction problem.
- There are 10 cookies in the cookie jar. Little Cookie Monster ate 6. How many cookies are left in the cookie jar?
- Use a number line to solve the problem. Draw a number line that ranges from 0 to 10.
- Count down the number line 6 places (9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4) to number “4”.
- Write a number sentence. Discuss with your pupils that you can represent this word problem with a number sentence. Guide them through the process of translating the word problem into a number sentence.
TEACHING SUBTRACTION WITH FACT FAMILIES
- A fact family is a set of facts or mathematical problems, which use the same numbers. Three numbers make up a fact family. These numbers can be added or subtracted in different methods.
- For instance, the numbers 3, 7, and 10 form a fact family, which can create two addition number sentences and two subtraction number sentences.
- Present your students with a subtraction problem.
- Use a fact family to solve the problem. Create two addition and two subtraction number sentences.
TEACHING COMMON CORE SUBTRACTION
- Common Core presents subtraction as measuring the distance between two points. To let your kids visualize, draw a number line ranging from 0 to 10.
- Present your students with a basic subtraction problem.
