The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or Britain, is a sovereign state in Europe. At one time, the United Kingdom ruled over many colonies all over the world. They were, and continue to be, a strong power.

- The monarch of the U.K is Queen Elizabeth II. She has been in power since February 6, 1952.

History Of The United Kingdom:
- The first people to arrive in the United Kingdom were the Picts. By the eighth century B.C, the Celts arrived from Europe. The Picts were pushed towards Scotland when this happened.
- By 43 A.D the Romans invaded and ruled the United Kingdom for almost 400 years. The Saxons were next to move into Britain by the sixth century A.D. These were German peoples, and they gave the people their name – the “Anglo-Saxons”
- The Saxons remained there until the Viking, Danish, and Norman invaders came through in the 900s. They stayed until the 1400s.
- A short time later, a nobleman named Henry Tudor claimed the English crown and became the monarch. This happened in 1485.
- On May 1st, 1707, the United Kingdom of Great Britain came into being, and united the separate kingdoms of England and Scotland.
- During the 18th century, Britain was involved in the Atlantic slave trade, and it is estimated that British shops transported over 2 million slaves from Africa to the West Indies. This stopped in 1807 when the trade was banned.
- By the 1800s, Britain had become one of the most powerful nations in the world, due to the success of the previous slave trade, and the colonial expansion that resulted in huge overseas empires.
- By the 1850’s, Britain was regarded as the “workshop of the world” due to its empire expanding to include India, Africa, and many other places around the world. They dominated trade and, in effect, controlled the economies of several regions.
- At the turn of the 20th century, Britain experienced some setbacks – the high cost of World War I meant that Britain could not afford to run the various colonies it held worldwide, and had to grant them
independence. - The United Kingdom fought in World War I and World War II. After World War II, Britain was one of the “Big Four” powers, along with the Soviet Union, the U.S, and China.
- Over the next three decades, most colonies that once belonged to the British Empire gained their independence, many of whom later became members of the
Commonwealth of Nations.

- The United Kingdom are a group of island located northwest of mainland Europe.
- They are separated from France by the English Channel.
- England accounts for just over half of the total area of the U.K.
- The majority of the north and west of the U.K is covered in mountain ranges separated by deep valleys. In contrast, the south of England is mostly comprised of rolling hills.
- There are a wide variety of landscapes and a range of habitats for animals and plants to thrive. This includes rugged mountains, several lakes, tall cliffs, marshes, beaches, and woodlands.

- Popular sports in the U.K include soccer, rugby, cricket, boxing, and golf. The majority of people in the U.K identify as Christian.
- Healthcare and education are devolved matters, with each country running their own systems.
