Arizona is a state in the southwestern region of the United States. It is also part of the western United States and of the Mountain West states. It is the sixth largest and the 15th most populated of the 50 states. Key Facts
- Arizona was a term derived from the Indian word “ali sonak”, which means “small spring”. Prior to colonial contact, it was the home of the Native American Navajo nation along with Utah and New Mexico. Compared to all states, Arizona has the largest percentage of land for Native Americans.
- On February 14, 1912, during president William Howard Taft’s term, it became the 48th state of America, which made it known as the Valentine State.
- The state of Arizona is one of the Four Corners along with Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, wherein a person can be in four states while standing in a single intersecting location.
- Arizona was connected to the eastern states in 1926 through the Southern Pacific Railroad.
- In 1930, Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. In addition, the best-preserved meteor crater can be seen near Winslow, Arizona.
- It has the most number of national monuments with the total of 18. The state produces the largest volume of copper compared to all the states in North America.
- In 1968, the Navajo Community College was established by and for the Navajo nation. Today, it is known as the Dine College.
- Arizona has the most number of mountain peaks and summits with 3,928, compared to other mountain states (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming).
- The famous London Bridge was reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, using the original stones.
- The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona, housed the largest collection of miniature airplane models. The deepest dam in the world, Parker Dam, is located in Arizona.
- Some of Arizona’s famous citizens are Sandra Day O’Connor (Supreme Court Justice), Zane Grey (author), Frank Lloyd Wright (architect), Steven Spielberg (director/producer), David Spade (actor), and Cesar Chavez (labor leader).
- The Grand Canyon Park and Kitt’s Peak National Observatory are some of the state’s landmarks. Ghost towns are scattered in Arizona, such as Tombstone, Ruby, Gillette, and Gunsight.
