Texas is the second most populous and the second largest of the 50 U.S. states in the United States of America, and the largest state in the 48 contiguous United States. See the fact file below for more information about Texas.
- The state of Texas borders with Louisiana (east), Oklahoma (north), New Mexico (west), and the Gulf of Mexico (southeast). Its largest city is Houston and the capital of Austin. Second most populous state with 25,145,561 and a total land area of 268,581 sq. miles. Known as the state of “Lone Star”.
- The first contact of the native inhabitants of Texas was during the early 16th century with the Spanish adventurer until the establishment of settlements in 18th century. Stephen Austin, began colonizing the territory under the Mexican government. Years later the Battle of Gonzales took place due to the growing dissatisfaction on Mexican rule.
- In March 1843, the Black Bean Episode executed 17 Texans that resulted to the series of raids by the Texans to Mexico that ignited the war between the two over territorial borders. The Secession Convention took place in 1861, Texas seceded from the Federal Union and readmitted by 1870 along with the reconstruction.
- In 1918, Texas granted women the right to vote and 8 years later they elected Miriam Ferguson as the first woman governor. While Dwight Eisenhower became the first Texan born president of the United States in 1953. Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas ten years after.
Statistics on The State Of Texas: - NASA opened the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston on 1962 which gave way to a San Antonio native, Ed White to walk in space. Apollo 11 was successful in their mission bringing the great leap for mankind as stated by Neil Armstrong.
- Today, Texas is known for the industry of cattle, cotton, grain sorghum, watermelons, cabbages, spinach, wheat, corn, shipping, petroleum, natural gas, steel, banking, and, insurance.
