Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (also known as AOC) is an American politician, serving as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district. She is known as the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress.

Key Facts & Information
EARLY LIFE
- AOC was born in New York City on October 13, 1989. She was the eldest child of Blanca Ocasio-Cortez and Sergio Ocasio. Her father was born in the Bronx to a Puerto Rican family and became an architect.
- In her high school life, AOC participated in various academic competitions. She won an award for a research project in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. In show of appreciation of her efforts, she has a small asteroid named after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez.
- After graduating from high school, AOC enrolled at Boston University. During college, she served as an intern for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, in the section on foreign affairs and immigration issues. She later graduated from Boston University in 2011 with Bachelor of Arts degree in both international relations and economics.
EARLY CAREER
- AOC moved back to the Bronx and took a job as a bartender and waitress to help her mother. She also worked for the nonprofit National Hispanic Institute.
- In 2016, AOC worked as an organizer for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. She traveled across America and interacted with people affected by the Flint water crisis and the Dakota Access Pipeline.
- Her experiences with the people across the country inspired her to begin to work for her own community. In 2016, she got a call from Brand New Congress, which was recruiting progressive candidates.
2018 CAMPAIGN
- AOC began her campaign in April, to challenge the incumbent, Joe Crowley. Her campaign utilized the grassroots approach, which meant she did not take any donations from corporations.
- AOC’s campaign was endorsed by civil rights organizations such as MoveOn, Black Lives Matter, Democracy for America, and by actress and also first-time candidate Cynthia Nixon.
- On June 28, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley by almost 15 percentage points. Her win and Crowley’s defeat gained nationwide attention. A lots of politicians were surprised by the defeat, since Joe Crowley had been incumbent for more than a decade.
MEDIA COVERAGE
- After her win, she quickly gained nationwide media attention. The Young Turks became the first media network to give AOC a platform and extensively cover her campaign and policies.
- In 2019, Elizabeth Warren wrote the entry of AOC for that year’s Time 100. She was also involved in the Netflix documentary of Knock Down the House, which focused on four female Democrats in the 2018 U.S. elections who were not already politicians.
CAREER AS CONGRESSWOMAN
- Because of her strong commitment to serving working-class people over corporate interests, and her advocacies for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice, many of her speeches gain popularity in the social media.
- On the first day of congressional orientation, AOC participated in a climate change protest outside the office of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. In January 2019, AOC made her first speech, criticizing hold-paycheck policies that have been implemented by the Trump administration for the immigrant groups.
- In February 2019, AOC delivered a speech that became the most-watched political video on Twitter. She questioned the panel about ethic regulations. She said that there are no rules for stopping lawmakers from being influenced by wealthy corporations.
- Another session that gained AOC popularity was when she questioned President Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen. AOC was able to obtain information from Cohen about President Trump’s shady practices.
- The exchange between AOC and Cohen prompted investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James, and caused his son Eric Trump to testify.
GREEN NEW DEAL
- On February 7, 2019, AOC and Senator Ed Markey submitted her first legislation draft, a joint non-binding resolution known as the Green New Deal to the Senate.
- Their plan is to implement the “social cost of carbon” that was part of the Obama administration’s plans to address climate change, in order to create jobs and boost the economy.
- The outline is to set a goal for the U.S. to create net-zero greenhouse gases in 10 years, by completely ditching fossil fuels, upgrading or replacing ‘every building’ in the country.
- The Green New Deal receives positive responses from activist groups such as Greenpeace and the Sunrise Movement. Meanwhile, no republican lawmakers have voiced support.
POLITICAL STANCE
- As a member of Democratic Socialists of America, AOC supports progressive policies where every citizen is entitled to guarantees, such as single-payer Medicare for All, tuition-free public college and trade school, a federal job guarantee, the cancellation of student debt, and an energy policy relying on 100% renewables.
- She favors policies that are similar to what happens in U.K, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.
