EARLY LIFE
- Antoine Griezmann was born on March 21, 1991 in Mâcon, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France.
- His father, Alain Griezmann, was a town councillor and is of German descent. His family comes from Münster, Germany.
- His mother Isabelle was a former hospital staff supervisor. She is of Portuguese descent. Her father, Amaro Lopes, was a footballer himself and played for Paços de Ferreira, a team in Portugal. In 1957, Amaro moved to France, where his daughter was born. He died in 1992.
- Antoine has two siblings. His brother Theo is also a football player.
- His sister Maud was one of the survivors in the siege of the Bataclan theatre during the 2015 Paris attacks.
- He spent summer holidays in Portugal.
- At a very young age, Griezmann developed an interest in football. He played for his local club, UF Mâcon.
- He struggled to earn a place in one of the youth academies of several professional teams as he was rejected due to his height and light frame.
- In 2005, he participated in a match against Paris-Saint Germain’s youth academy. His skills were noticed by numerous clubs, one of which was the Spanish club Real Sociedad. He was later offered an official position at their club after a 2-week trial.
CLUB CAREER
- In 2009, after four years of training with Real Sociedad’s youth team, he debuted for the senior squad.
- In his first season, he was a consistent scorer for the team, earning a regular playing position.
- Despite interest from French clubs, he signed a five-year contract with Real Sociedad, in April 2010, making it his first professional contract.
- In July 2014, he signed a six-year contract with Atlético Madrid.
- Atlético Madrid won the 2014 Supercopa de España.
- After six months of playing for the club, he earned the title of La Liga Player of the Month for January.
- His first season with Atletico concluded with him being included in the Team of the Year at the La Liga Awards.
- He later improved his skills in his second season with the team, strengthening his name as one of the best forwards in European football as he eliminated Barcelona in a Champions League quarter-final match.
- Atlético Madrid were the champions of the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League.
- Despite previously rejecting a move to Barcelona, 2018-19 ended up as his final season with Atlético Madrid.
- He won the 2018 UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.
- In May 2019, it was publicized that he would leave Madrid and transfer to Barcelona.
- When his transfer was completed in July 2019, his plaque outside the
- Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid was vandalized.
- Despite criticism by Barcelona fans, he performed relatively well as a regular scorer for the team.
- Antoine currently plays as a forward for Barcelona.
- FC Barcelona lost to Athletic Bilbao in the 2020–21 Supercopa de España Final.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Griezmann debuted for the France under-19 team in 2010.
- He participated in the 2010 UEFA U-19 championship and scored 2 goals, as France eventually won the championship.
- After making under-20 team appearances for France, Griezmann was later called up to the under-21 team in October 2010.
- In 2011, he represented France at the U-20 World Cup.
- In November 2012, Antoine was suspended due to a disciplinary infraction. He was banned from representing France until December 2013. Though he thought about switching to the Portugal National team, he remained with France until he was called-up once more in 2014 by coach Didier Deschamps.
- In the 2014 World Cup, he was named in Deschamps’ squad.
- At the 2016 Euro Cup, Griezmann was awarded the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament.
- Griezmann was included in the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. France eventually won the Championship against Croatia.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- Griezmann married Erika Choperena in 2017 after six years of dating. She is of Spanish descent.
- Their first daughter Mia was born on April 8, 2016. Their second child Amaro was born on the same day in 2019.
- Antoine is an ambassador of the sportswear brand Puma, Head and Shoulders and Gillette.
- He is also known as “Le Petit Diable”.
- He has been featured on the cover of EA Sports’ FIFA game.
- In 2020, he created his own esports company, Grizi Esport.
