Early Life:
- Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was the son of Barack Obama Sr., a lawyer from Kenya, Africa, and Ann Dunham of Kansas.
- In 1966, young Barack lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, after the divorce of his parents. At the age of 10, he went back to Hawaii and was raised by his grandparents.
- By 1979, Barack graduated with excellent grades from Punahou Academy. When he was 21 years old, his father Obama Sr. died from a fatal car crash in Nairobi.
- Barack studied at the Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years and transferred to Columbia University in New York City. Upon graduation in 1983, Barack moved to Chicago, Illinois, and worked as a community organizer at the Developing Communities Project.
- In 1988, Obama entered Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude in 1991. While at Harvard, he became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. It was also where he met his future wife, Michelle Robinson.
- On October 3, 1992, Barack and Michelle got married. The couple had two daughters namely; Malia Ann and Sasha Obama.
- They moved to Kenwood, Southside of Chicago.
- After law school, Obama became a civil rights lawyer with the firm Miner, Barnhill & Galland in Chicago. From 1992 to 2004, he became a constitutional law part-time lecturer and professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
- In 1995, Obama published “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance”. Since then, the autobiography has been printed in 25 languages including Chinese, Hebrew, and Swedish. By 2006, the audiobook version of Dreams was awarded by the Grammyβs as the best-spoken word album.
- In 1996, Obama ran as a Democrat for a seat in the Illinois State Senate. As a state senator, Obama focused on the expansion of healthcare services and early childhood education. In addition, he pursued videotaping of interrogations in capital cases to ensure proper law enforcement.
- In 2004, after his unsuccessful run for the U.S. House of Representatives, he won the vacated seat in the U.S. Senate.
- As a U.S. Senator, Obama worked with Republican Senator Richard Lugar to destroy weapons of mass destruction in Eastern Europe, including Russia. Furthermore, he led the website tracking of all federal spending.
- In October 2006, he published his book, The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, which became a New York Times best-selling book.
- On June 3, 2008, Obama became the official presidential nominee of the Democratic Party after beating U.S. Senator from New York and former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
Barack Obamaβs Presidency
- On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama took his oath as the 44th President of the United States. He defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain. Delaware Senator Joe Biden became his vice president.
- In his first 100 days as the President, Obama persuaded Congress to expand healthcare insurance for children as well as equal pay
for women. - Obama improved Americaβs foreign policy through open dialogues with China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela. As to the war on terrorism, Obama sent additional troops to
- Afghanistan and withdrew those in Iraq. In addition, he ordered an offensive against pirates in Somalia. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts against terrorism.
- In March 2010, Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, which expanded medical care for Americans. It became known as Obamacare.
- He signed the Budget Control Act of 2011, creating a bipartisan committee to look for solutions to the countryβs fiscal difficulties. By March 2011, Obama supported NATO airstrikes against the Libyan dictator, Muammar al-Qaddafi (also al-Gaddafi). On May 11, 2011, the infamous terrorist Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan.
- On November 6, 2012, Obama won the election for his second term in office, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. By January 20, 2013, he took his oath of office through Chief Justice John Roberts at the U.S. Capitol building.
- In July 2013, President Obama joined former President George W. Bush in Africa to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Al-Qaeda attacks on U.S. targets.
- As part of Americaβs foreign policies, Obama met several world leaders, including German chancellor Angela Merkel, newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Cuban President Raul Castro, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- In November 2015, he attended the Paris Climate Conference held in Paris, France. The United States committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Early in January 2016, President Obama released executive orders for stricter gun control policies.
Post-presidency
- The Obama family moved to a home in Kalorama, Washington D.C.
- In 2017, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- As a response to president-elect Donald Trumpβs withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, Obama spoke to the gathering of mayors around the world to sign the Chicago Climate Charter.
