  • Beatrix Potter, born on the 28th of July, 1866, is one of the world’s best-selling and best-loved children’s authors. She wrote and illustrated more than 20 children’s books starring Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Benjamin Bunny. Her books have been translated into more than 35 languages and sold over 100 million copies.
  • She was born in Kensington, London, to a wealthy family where both her parents lived on inheritances from the cotton trade. Both her parents, Rupert and Helen Potter, had artistic interests. Rupert, although trained as a lawyer, devoted himself to photography and art while Helen was skilled at embroidery and watercolors.Being born a daughter of the Victorian upper-middle class, Beatrix had a typically restricted childhood. Educated at home, she had few opportunities to meet other children her age. She enjoyed trips to museums and she was introduced to Pre-Raphaelite painter Sir John Everett Millais, from whom she got encouragement and inspiration.
  • Beatrix, along with her young brother, Bertram, developed an interest in nature and animals at an early age. Her sketches included animals and, in the late 1870s, she began studying at the National Art Training School.
  • Reeling from her loss, Beatrix bought Hill Top Farm in the Lake District and there she wrote such books as The Tale of Tom Kitten (1907) and The Tale of Samuel Whiskers (1908). In 1913, she married local lawyer William Heelis and continued to write after tying the knot. She published The Fairy Caravan in 1926 and The Tale of Little Pig Robinson in 1930. By the outbreak of WW1, Beatrix was considerably wealthy by her own merit.
  • In her later years, Potter focused much of her attention on her farms and land preservation in the Lake District. She became a successful breeder of sheep and was well regarded for her work to protect the beautiful countryside she adored. She died on December 22, 1943, in Sawrey, England, and in her will, she left much of her land holdings (4 000 acres) to the National Trust to protect it from development and to preserve it for future generations. She also left a book written in code, which was published as The Journal of Beatrix Potter in 1966.
