Cam Newton is an American football quarterback who was considered one of the nation’s top high school football recruits in 2007. Currently, Newton plays for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). Newton is considered to be the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, win a national championship, and get drafted into the NFL within one year.

BIOGRAPHY AND EARLY YEARS

  • Cameron Jerrell Newton was born in College Park, Atlanta, Georgia, on May 11, 1989. He was the second of three children of Cecil, Sr., and Jackie Newton. Newton spent his childhood in an environment where athletics and hard work were a central part of their lives.
  • Cam Newton attended Camp Creek Middle School for junior high school and Westlake High School in Fulton County, Georgia, for his senior high school. At Westlake, Newton showed exceptional skills in football and basketball.
  • The former coach of the Westlake football team, coach Dallas Allen, heard about Newton’s throwing ability, and the freshman coaches suggested that he was needed to move from the freshman team to the varsity team.
  • Coach Allen was impressed by Newton’s size, speed, his cannon of an arm, and the foot speed Newton had.
  • In his senior year, Newton was offered several scholarships from the University of Georgia, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech, and many more.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA AND BLINN COLLEGE

  • During a press conference at Westlake High School on September 7, 2006, Newton made the decision to choose the University of Florida over Oklahoma and Mississippi State.
  • Newton chose the Gators because his skills and talents fit the spread option offense better than any other team out there.
  • In 2007, as a freshman at the University of Florida, Newton earned his spot as the back-up for star quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow. He beat his fellow freshman, John Brantley, for the position.
  • Newton played in five games and threw 40 yards on 5-of-10 passing. He also ran the ball 16 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
  • During his sophomore year in 2008, Newton was able to play in the season opener against Hawaii, but he suffered an ankle injury that made him take a medical redshirt (a mechanism where a student-athlete can practice with the team and attend classes without using their years of athletic eligibility) season.
  • However, following his injury, Newton was charged and arrested for the alleged theft of a laptop computer from a student. He was indefinitely suspended from the team and announced his intention to transfer three days before Florida’s championship win over Oklahoma.
  • Newton’s charges were dropped after he completed a court-approved pretrial diversion program. He also left the university rather than facing a suspension or expulsion.
  • The January of 2009, Newton was able to transfer to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, under head coach Brad Franchione.
  • That fall, Newton led his team to the 2009 NJCAA National Football Championship after running for 655 yards and throwing 2,833 yards with 22 touchdowns. Newton was named a juco All-American honorable mention, and he was the most recruited juco quarterback in the country.
  • That year, Newton was ranked the number one quarterback from either high school or junior college by Rivals.com, and he was the only five-star recruit.

AUBURN UNIVERSITY

  • In 2010, Newton made his return to Division I football at Auburn University. He started his first game with a victory over Arkansas State on September 4, 2010. Newton won over with five total offensive touchdowns and over 350 yards of total offense.
  • Newton was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance during the game. Two weeks later, Newton achieved his second break-out game against the South Carolina Gamecocks with over 330 total offensive yards and five total touchdowns.
  • Newton led the Auburn Tigers Football team to an SEC Championship on December 4, 2010. They defeated South Carolina once again by a score of 56-17, which was also recorded as an SEC Championship Game record for most points scored and largest margin of victory.
  • Newton was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award with a career-best six touchdowns. In NCAA FBS history, Newton became the third player to throw and run for 20-plus touchdowns in a single season because of his excellent and outstanding performance.
  • However, after many successful games with the Tigers, Auburn declared Newton as ineligible after finding evidence that Cecil Newton, his brother, solicited Mississippi State for money in exchange for Cam Newton’s athletic service.
  • Fortunately, Auburn immediately filed to have him reinstated. The NCAA declared him eligible for the 2010 SEC Championship Game three days later, after finding out that there was no sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn had any knowledge of Cecil Newton’s actions.
  • The NCAA cleared Cam Newton’s eligibility as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, which he won in a landslide victory.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

  • During the 2011 NFL Draft, Newton was selected with the first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. Newton is also the first reigning Heisman Trophy winner to go first overall since Carson Palmer in 2003.
  • During the 2011 NFL lockout, Newton spent 12 hours a day at the IMG Madden Football Academy in Bradenton, with two of those hours per day being spent doing one-on-one training with fellow Heisman Trophy winner and former Panther Quarterback Chris Weinke.
  • Newton signed a four-year deal with the Carolina Panthers worth over $22 million on July 29, 2011. Since Week 1 of that year, Cam Newton has been the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback.
  • Newton broke many records. However, they did not have many wins. Fortunately, it all changed in week 5 of the 2013 season when Newton and the Panthers broke into an 8-game winning streak.
  • In the following years, Newton became one of the league’s biggest stars. In 2015, he threw for 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and rushed for another 10 scores. Newton also led the Panthers to a remarkable 15-1 record and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.

  • Cam Newton is also known as “SuperCam” because of his touchdown celebrations where he impersonates Clark Kent in ripping open his shirt to reveal his “Superman” costume.
  • Newton is also known for his touchdown celebration where he points to the camera.
