EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
- Carlos Ismael Noriega was on born October 8, 1959 in Lima, Peru.
- According to the 2016 interview with the University of Southern California (USC) News, their family moved to the United States when he was 5 years old with no experience speaking in English.
- His father emphasized to them the importance of studying hard even paying a neighbor girl to talk to him in English so that his language skills would improve.
- In 1977, Noriega graduated from Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, California.
- He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Southern California in 1981.
- He earned a Master of Science degree in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1990 and a Master of Science degree in space systems operations from the same school and same year.
MILITARY CAREER
- Noriega was a member of USC’s Navy ROTC unit and received his commission in the United States Marine Corps in 1981.
- After graduation from flight school, he flew CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters in conjunction with HMM-165 from 1983 until 1985 at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
- Noriega performed two 6-month shipboard deployments in the West Pacific/Indian Ocean, as well as operations in support of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in Beirut, Lebanon.
- He finished his tour in Hawaii as the Base Operations Officer for Marine Air Base Squadron 24.
- Noriega was transferred to MCAS Tustin, California in 1986. He worked there as the aviation safety officer and instructor pilot with HMT-301.
- In 1988, he was chosen to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. In 1990 he earned two master of science degrees – M.S. degrees in computer science and space systems operations.
- In September 1990, Noriega was assigned to United States Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
- He was also responsible for different software development projects.
- He eventually became the command representative for the development and integration of the major space and missile warning computer system upgrades for Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.
- By the time he retired from the USMC in 2003, he had logged approximately 2,200 flight hours in various fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
NASA CAREER
- Being selected by NASA in December 1994, Noriega, in March 1995, reported to the Johnson Space Center.
- He finished a year of training and evaluation. He became qualified for appointment as a mission specialist in May 1996.
- Noriega handled technical tasks in the Astronaut Office EVA/Robotics and Operations Planning Branches.
- He first flew into space being a member of the seven-person crew on the Space Shuttle Atlantis mission STS-84 to the Mir space station in 1997.
- In 2000, he turned back to space being a member of the five-person crew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-97 to the International Space Station.
- This mission happened to be the last human spaceflight of the 20th century.
- As the result of both expeditions of Noriega, he spent a total of 20 days, one hour, and 18 minutes in space.
- In January 2005, Noriega retired from the NASA Astronaut Corps. He left NASA but continued to serve as the Manager, Advanced Projects Office, Constellation Program, Johnson Space Center.
AWARDS AND HONORS
- Noriega has been the receiver of several honors.
- He’s been the recipient of the following awards: two Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, Air Medal (Strike Flight Award), Navy Achievement Medal, two NASA Space Flight Medal, and NASA Exceptional Service Medal.
