EARLY LIFE
- David Luiz Moreira Marinho was born on April 22, 1987, in Diadema, São Paulo, Brazil.
- His parents are Ladislau and Regina Marinho, both former teachers. They were very supportive of David’s childhood dream to pursue football. He has one sister named Isabelle.
- As a child, David played for São Paulo FC’s youth team. In 2001, he moved to Esporte Clube Vitória, and made his professional debut in 2006.
- It was at Vitória that he started to focus on being a Central Defender rather than a Defensive Midfielder.
CLUB CAREER
- In January 2007, David moved to Portugal to play for the local club Benfica.
- In March 2007, he officially committed to the Portuguese club for five years for a €1.5 million transfer fee.
- Benfica won the 2008–09 Taça da Liga, and defended their title in the 2009–10 and 2010–11 seasons.
- He scored his first goal for Benfica in January 2009.
- During the 2009–10 season, David’s importance to Benfica was emphasized as he helped them win the Primeira Liga. David was declared the Primeira Liga Player of the Year.
- In January 2011, he moved to the English club Chelsea for €25 million. He debuted for them the following month.
- He instantly became popular with the club’s fans. In March, he was declared the Premier League Player of the Month.
- Despite being affected by injuries, his first season with the club was successful as they won the UEFA Champions League.
- Though he missed the final match due to an injury, his club also won the FA Cup.
- The club finished second at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup, and David was awarded the Silver Ball.
- Chelsea later won the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League.
- In June 2014, he transferred to Paris Saint-Germain with a world-record transfer fee for a defender.
- That year, he was included in the FIFA World Team of the Year. He was also shortlisted for the 2014 Ballon d’Or.
- During David’s two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, they consecutively won the Ligue 1 Championship, Coupe de France, and Coupe de la Ligue. They also won the Trophée des Champions in 2015 and 2016.
- David was also included in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year for two consecutive seasons.
- In August 2016, David returned to Chelsea. In his first season after returning, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year as his team won the 2016–17 Premier League.
- They also finished second in the 2016–17 FA Cup.
- The club later won the 2017–18 FA Cup, though David missed the final due to injury.
- During David’s last season with the club, they won the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League and finished second in the EFL Cup.
- He was also included in the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League Squad of the Season.
- In August 2019, David moved to Chelsea’s rival club Arsenal.
- Despite making several errors in his first season, David helped the club win the 2020 FA Cup against his former club Chelsea.
- The following season, he contributed a penalty to win the 2020 FA Community Shield against Liverpool.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- In 2007, he represented Brazil’s under-20 team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, though they were eliminated in the round of 16.
- Despite calls for him to represent Portugal, he debuted for Brazil’s senior team in 2010.
- David helped Brazil win the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
- He was called up for Brazil’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.
- He scored against Colombia, taking Brazil to the quarter-final.
- Despite being favored to win the World Cup they were hosting, Brazil suffered a 7-1 semi-final defeat against Germany. David captained the team as they lacked Thiago Silva and Neymar.
- Brazil later finished fourth after losing to the Netherlands.
- David represented Brazil at the 2015 Copa América, though he was unable to participate in the Copa América Centenario and 2018 World Cup.
OUTSIDE FOOTBALL
- David Luiz is an Evangelical Christian.
- He is often called by the nickname Sideshow Bob, inspired by a character from The Simpsons.
- In 2014, he was one of the football players featured in Nike’s short film Winner Stays On.
- He is a citizen of Portugal and can represent them at a national level, though he chose to play for Brazil.
- Luiz and Willian own an Italian restaurant in London called Babbo.
