- Derrick Martell Rose was born on 4 October 1988, in Chicago, Illinois. He and his three brothers were raised by their single mother.
- Dwayne, Reggie, and Allan were talented basketball players who taught Rose basketball on nearby courts.
- Interested in basketball from a young age, he enrolled at the Simeon Career Academy on 2003, where his talent in the sport earned him a lot of popularity within a short time.
- Despite not being in the varsity during his earlier years, he went on to put up 18.5 points, 6.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game and led both the freshman and sophomore teams to city championships with a 24โ1 record.
- During Rose’s junior year in 2006, he helped his team, โThe Simeon Wolverines,โ win the Chicago Public League championship.
- In his senior season, Rose ranked the nation’s best high school point guard, averaged 25.2 points per game and guided Simeon to a 33-2 record and its second consecutive state title.
- That same year, the Chicago Tribune named the young player its 2007 “Illinois Mr. Basketball Player.”
- Rose was then ranked the fifth best prospect in the nation by Sports Illustrated.
- After he finished his schooling, several college coaches had him on their rosters due to his popularity.
- Eventually Rose made the decision to enroll at the University of Memphis and represent its basketball team.
- He led the Memphis Tigers to a total of thirty eight wins in his year with the team.
- In the 2008 national championship game however, he scored only 18 points and his team lost.
NBA CAREER
- Derrick Rose was drafted into the NBA in the year 2008, selected by the Chicago Bulls.
- He was also selected to the U.S. Select Team to scrimmage against and prepare the National Team for the Olympics in Beijing.
- In Rose’s first NBA season (2008-09), he averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 assists per game, earning Rookie of the Year honors and led the Bulls back to the playoffs.
- In his second year, he was elected to his first career All-Star Game as a reserve for the Eastern Conference.
- In the 2011 NBA playoffs, he led the Bulls to face the Miami Heat with Lebron, Wade, and Bosh. The Bulls lost the series by five games.
- On May 3, Rose was named the NBA Most Valuable Player, becoming the youngest NBA player to receive such an award.
- Rose was voted as an All-Star Game starter for two consecutive years.
- During Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, Rose injured his left knee while trying to jump.
- He tore his ACL that resulted in most of the next season being under injury. He only returned late March.
- In his 2013-2014 season, he once again tore his right knee meniscus and surgery was required, ending his season.
- Despite the injury, he was again a part of the US National Basketball team next season, which won a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
- The next season another 20-game absence was required of Rose to a round of surgery on his right knee.
- Upon his return, the Bulls reached the semi-finals in the Eastern Conference, but lost to the Cavaliers in a six-game series.
- In his final season with the bulls, Rose suffered left orbital bone fracture so he wore a face mask.
- In June 2016, along with Justin Holiday, Rose was traded to the New York Knicks.
- He started off brilliantly in his debut game with the Knicks, against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- He was again plagued by injury, tearing the meniscus in his left knee.
On his 2018-2019 season, Rose signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves. - On January 15 2019, against the Philadelphia 76ers, Rose reached 10,000 career points.
- An elbow injury ruled him out for the rest of the season and by the next year, Rose signed with the Detroit Pistons.
AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS
- Rose was a member of the United States men’s national basketball teams that won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Cup.
- He became the youngest player in NBA history to win the Most Valuable Player award at age 22 in 2011.
PERSONAL LIFE
- Rose is a Christian. He has talked about his faith saying, “God does everything for a reason.”
- Rose wears a wristband that says “In Jesusโ Name I Play” and has several tattoos about his faith.
- On October 9, 2012, Rose’s girlfriend, Mieka Reese, gave birth to their son, Derrick Jr.
- In 2018, Rose introduced The Rose Scholars program, to help students achieve a higher education.
