EARLY LIFE
- Didier Yves Drogba Tébily was born on March 11, 1978 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
- His parents Albert and Clotilde Drogba both worked in a bank.
- Drogba has two younger brothers named Joël and Freddy. They were also footballers and played for clubs around Europe.
- As a child, his family called him “Tito”.
- Drogba’s family are of the Bété people, an ethnic group from Ivory Coast. He is a devout Roman Catholic.
- When Drogba was five, he moved to France to stay with his uncle, Michel Goba, who was also a professional footballer. Drogba returned home after three years.
- Drogba was sent to France once more after his family went through financial difficulties. Eventually, his parents moved to France.
- As a child, he played for youth teams in Tourcoing, Abbeville, and Vannes. He eventually joined the youth team of Levallois.
CLUB CAREER
- In 1997, Drogba began training with the Ligue 2 club Le Mans. He struggled with injuries for two years and had a difficult time adjusting to daily training, as he did not have these opportunities during his childhood.
- He signed his first professional contract in 1999. During his first season at Le Mans, he performed well but eventually lost his regular position due to injuries.
- Drogba was signed by Ligue 1 club Guingamp in 2002. He became a regular scorer for the club and soon caught the attention of other teams.
- He spent the 2003–2004 season with Olympique de Marseille. His goal-scoring ability helped him win the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Player of the Year award.
- Drogba moved to Chelsea in July 2004 for £24 million. Though he was briefly injured in his first season, the club went on to win the Premier League and League Cup.
- He helped the team win the FA Community Shield in 2005. They also successfully defended their Premier League title.
- Drogba won the Premier League Golden Boot during his successful 2006–07 season. He helped Chelsea win the League Cup once more. They also won the FA Cup as he scored in the final.
- He was also named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
- After manager José Mourinho left the club, Drogba expressed his desire to leave Chelsea.
- Chelsea finished second in the League Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
- The 2008–09 season was difficult for Drogba as he suffered from injuries and match bans. Despite this, he helped his club win the 2009 FA Cup Final.
- The 2009–10 season was more successful as he helped his club win the Community Shield once more.
- Chelsea won the Premier League and Drogba received the Golden Boot. He also scored to help his club win the 2010 FA Cup Final.
- Chelsea lost the 2010 FA Community Shield to Manchester United. In November, Drogba contracted malaria but recovered promptly.
- Despite briefly suffering from a concussion due to a match collision, the 2011–12 season was generally successful. He scored the equalizing goal and winning penalty to help his club win the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich.
- Drogba also scored in the 2012 FA Cup Final, leading to a victory against Liverpool.
- In May 2012, it was announced that Drogba would be leaving Chelsea. In June, he joined the Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.
- In January 2013, Drogba signed with the Turkish team Galatasaray. They won the 2012–13 Süper Lig.
- During a match, Drogba and Emmanuel Eboue were abused with racist chants by opposing fans.
- Drogba scored and helped his team win the 2013 Turkish Super Cup.
- In July 2014, Chelsea announced Drogba’s return.
- Though it was his last season with Chelsea, they ended as winners of the 2014–15 Premier League and League Cup.
- In July 2015, he joined the Major League Soccer team Montreal Impact. In September, he was named MLS Player of the Month.
- In July 2016, Drogba played in the 2016 MLS All-Star Game. He later moved to United Soccer League team Phoenix Rising FC in April 2017.
- Drogba announced his retirement in November 2018.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Drogba debuted for the Ivory Coast national team in 2002.
- He helped the country qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup for the first time.
- Although he scored in the match that sent Ivory Coast to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations final, they eventually lost to Egypt.
- At the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Ivory Coast were eliminated during the group stage.
- Drogba was declared Ivorian Player of the Year and 2006 African Footballer of the Year.
- Drogba was a regular goal scorer for Ivory Coast in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, though they eventually finished fourth.
- He helped his team qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was also declared 2009 African Footballer of the Year.
- At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ivory Coast were eliminated during the group stage.
- Ivory Coast finished second in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
- Drogba participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, though Ivory Coast did not make it past the group stage.
- In August 2014, Drogba retired from international football. He is currently the top scorer for the national team.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- In 2005, after qualifying for the World Cup, Drogba appeared on national television to appeal for a ceasefire during the Ivorian civil war.
- Drogba met Lalla Diakité in the 1990s. They married in 2011. In January 2021, they announced their separation.
- They have three children named Isaac, Iman, and Kieran.
- In 2007, he was named a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations. In 2010, he was included in Time magazine’s world’s 100 most influential people.
- In 2014, Drogba participated in FIFA’s “11 against Ebola” campaign.
