BIOGRAPHY
- Elisha “Eli” Nelson Manning was born on January 3, 1981, in New Orleans, United States. He is a son of Archie and Olivia Williams Manning. Eli Manning is the youngest of three brothers.
- Manning’s childhood was not known but it was stated that he started training at an early age with his father and his two older brothers, Cooper and Peyton Manning.
COLLEGIATE CAREER
- Manning received a call from the former offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee, David Cutcliffe, before deciding on which college to attend.
- However, Manning decided to enroll at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 2000. His father and brother, Cooper, also attended the same university as him.
- Manning played as a quarterback for the Rebels for four years and recorded outstanding game performances.
- Manning recorded 45-single-game, season, and career records. He recorded exceptional numbers, including 10,119 passing yards, 81 touchdown passes, and a passer rating of 137.7, which made him land fifth, third, and tied at sixth on the SEC Career list, respectively.
- In 2003, Manning also led the rebels to win a victory against Oklahoma State Cowboys with a 31-28 record score and a 10-3 record. The following year, Manning was invited to play in the 2004 Senior Bowl. However, he decided not to play.
- In Manning’s senior year, he won several awards, including the Maxwell Award as the nation’s best all-around player, the National Football Foundation, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award, the Sporting News Radio Socrates Award, and the SEC Most Valuable Player Award.
- Manning was also nominated as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, but finished third.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER: THE NFL DRAFT
- During the 2004 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers initially had the rights to the overall first pick because of their 4-12 record the previous year. The Chargers wanted to draft Manning as the first overall because he was also the most desired player at that time. However, Manning stated that if the Chargers drafted him, he would refuse the offer. Yet, the team traded him on draft day to the New York Giants.
- During Manning’s rookie year, he was benched at one point in favor of veteran Kurt Warner, but Warner soon retired. Manning was named the Giants’ starter once again in 2005.
- Manning led the Giants to average results for the next three seasons, having a 25-223 record with two playoff appearances under the new head coach, Tom Coughlin.
- In the 2006 season, Manning started to play well, completing over 65 percent of his passes for the first four games. However, during the season’s second half, Manning struggled, and his performance reduced towards the end of the season.
- Yet, Manning and the Giants managed to rebound against the division rivals, Eagles, with a 3-024 overtime victory during the second week. The following week, Manning managed to throw 270 yards and 22 touchdowns, but the Giants lost again.
SUPER BOWLS XLII AND XLVI
- During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, the Giants made the playoffs. The Giants finished the 2007 season with a record of 10-6. Manning led the Giants through the playoffs that year and into the Super Bowl, where they were the underdogs to the undefeated New England Patriots.
- Manning and the Giants defeated the Patriots, and Manning was named the Most Valuable Player of the team. He managed to complete 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards and threw two touchdowns.
- With Manning’s victory, he and his brother, Peyton, were the first brothers to become back-to-back Super Bowl winners and MVP quarterbacks.
- In the 2011 season, Manning finished with 29 touchdown passes and a team-record 4,933 passing yards in the regular season. Even though the Giants just made the playoffs with a 9-7 record, Manning and the Giants beat powerhouse teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers. Again, they were able to enter the Super Bowl XLVI.
- For the second time, Manning won over the Patriots and received the MVP award for completing 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown win.
MANNING’S LATE CAREER AND RETIREMENT
- Over the following years, the performance of Manning fluctuated. Manning followed his Pro Bowl campaign in 2012 by leading the NFL interceptions in 2013, and gave his team a chance to win with his strong arm and veteran confidence.
- Manning achieved a career-high for having 35 touchdown passes in 2015, leading to his fourth Pro Bowl Section. In 2016, he led the Giants back into the playoffs for the first time after five years.
- In the 2017 season, Manning’s team had a poor start, and he was prompted to bench himself in November, breaking his streak of 210 consecutive regular-season starts. However, Manning managed to bounce back, having thrown 4,299 yards in 2018, but the team would give the starting position to rookie Daniel Jones the following year.
- Late in the year, rookie Daniel Jones experienced an injury that brought Manning back in the game and he achieved a standing ovation for having 283 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns in a home victory against the Miami Dolphins on December 15.
- After some conclusion on Manning’s 16th NFL season, Manning announced his retirement in January 2020. Manning ranked 7th in the league history with 4,895 completions, 57,023 passing yards, and 366 passing touchdowns. He also completed a 117-117 regular-season starter and finished with an outstanding 8-4 mark in the playoffs.
