EARLY LIFE
- Felipe Massa was born on April 25, 1981, in São Paulo, Brazil.
- He is of Italian descent.
- He began racing karts when he was eight years old.
- In his first season, he finished fourth.
- He continued to compete in national and international championships for seven years.
- In 1998, Massa competed in the Brazilian Formula Chevrolet Championship, where he finished in fifth place.
- In the next season, he won 3 of the 10 races and won the championship.
- In 2000, Massa relocated to Europe to compete in the Italian Formula Renault series.
- Massa won both the Italian and the European Formula Renault championships in 2000.
- Instead of moving to Formula Three, Massa chose to compete in the Euro Formula 3000, where he won 6 of the 8 races and claimed the 2001 championship.
- Following his 2001 win, the Sauber racing team offered Massa a Formula One test.
- The Sauber team signed him for 2002.
- Massa also drove as a guest driver for Alfa Romeo in the European Touring Car Championship.
FORMULA ONE CAREER
- In his first year with Sauber in Formula One, Massa was paired with Nick Heidfeld.
- Nick Heidfeld claimed the 1999 International Formula 3000 championship.
- Proving to be a competitive driver, Massa scored 4 championship points in his first season.
- He was issued a 10 place grid penalty because of an incident during the Italian Grand Prix.
- The team tried to avoid the penalty by replacing Massa with Heinz-Harald Frentzen for the United States Grand Prix.
- Massa returned for the Japanese Grand Prix, but he was left without a race seat in 2003 after Sauber confirmed that Frentzen would pair with Heidfeld the following season.
- Massa spent a year out in 2003 but continued to gain experience by testing for the Ferrari team, who was Sauber’s engine suppliers.
- Sauber re-signed Massa for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, proving to be a better and more mature driver than his debut season.
- In 2006, Massa moved to Ferrari, becoming Michael Schumacher’s teammate.
- Massa and Schumacher developed a solid bond in their single season together.
- Massa completed his first season with Ferrari with an impressive pole position in Japan and Brazil.
- He also became the first Brazilian since Ayrton Senna to win the Brazilian Grand Prix.
- In 2007, Massa was on track in a title fight in the first half of the season, but lost momentum in the second half, forcing him to aid his new teammate Kimi Räikkönen who won the title in the end.
- In 2008, Massa almost won the World Championship, had his title rival Lewis Hamilton not defeated Massa for the title by a single point.
- In 2009, Massa, fortunately, survived an accident where a suspension spring from a competitor’s car sprung and hit Massa’s helmet.
- Massa was rendered unconscious and suffered serious head injuries so he missed the rest of the season.
- In 2010, Massa returned to Ferrari, paired with Fernando Alonso.
- Alonso was the team’s confirmed number one driver and Massa aided his teammate’s win despite seemingly being on course for winning.
- Massa was Alonso’s teammate for four seasons.
- 2011 was not a great season for Massa; he finished no higher than fifth in all races and ended up placing sixth overall.
- In 2012, Massa secured himself seventh place despite a struggle for the majority of the campaign.
- 2013 marked the eighth and final season of Massa with the Ferrari team; he placed eighth overall.
- In 2014, Kimi Räikkönen replaced Massa in Ferrari, and Massa signed with the Williams team.
- Paired with Valtteri Bottas, Massa signed with Williams with a refreshed spirit. At the time, Williams was considered the third-best team in Formula One.
- In 2015, Massa’s momentum saw his return to podium finishes and sixth overall.
- 2016 marked the third season of Massa with the Williams team; he announced his plans to retire from Formula One at the Italian Grand Prix.
- However, things didn’t go as planned when in 2017, Massa signed with Williams after Valtteri Bottas signed with Mercedes.
- Throughout the 2017 season, Massa mostly outperformed his younger teammate, Lance Stroll.
- In April 2018, it was announced that Massa would be joining Formula E racing for Venturi Grand Prix for three years starting with the 2018–19 Formula E season, but he eventually announced his retirement on the final day of the 2019–2020 season.

- Felipe Massa married Anna Raffaela Bassi on November 30, 2007.
- Their first son, Felipinho, was born on November 30, 2009.
- Massa is Roman Catholic.
- Massa held an annual charity karting event called Desafio Internacional das Estrelas (International Challenge of the Stars) from 2005 and 2014.
