EARLY LIFE
- Gareth Frank Bale was born on July 16, 1989, in Cardiff, Wales.
- His mother Debbie was an operations manager and his father Frank was a school caretaker. He has one sister named Vicky. His uncle is Chris Pike, a former professional footballer.
- As a child, he played for Cardiff Civil Service FC. At age 9, his talent already garnered attention.
- His skill became more evident when he attended Whitchurch High School. He was so talented at football that the Physical Education program had rules restricting Bale from using his advanced skills.
CLUB CAREER
- In 2006, the year of his professional debut, he became the second-youngest player to represent Southampton FC. in the English Premier League.
- During his first season, he became known for his skilled freekicks.
- His praised performance in his first year led to Bale being recognized as the BBC Wales Young Sports Personality of the Year and Football League Young Player of the Year.
- In May 2007, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year deal. He debuted for the team in July 2007.
- Despite a good start with the team, an injury saw Gareth sidelined from December 2007 to August 2008.
- In March 2009, his team lost the Football League Cup Final to Manchester United.
- Despite an injury early in 2009, Bale continued to impress in the 2009-10 season. He was later recognized as the 2010 Welsh Footballer of the Year.
- In 2010, he was recognized as the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year. He was declared PFA Players’ Player of the Year in April 2011.
- The 2011-12 season saw Bale as a consistent goal scorer for the club. He was the only British player included in the 2011 UEFA Team of the Year.
- His performance in the 2012-13 season was highly praised. He scored several times for his team and ended the season as the top scorer of Tottenham, PFA Players’ Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, and Premier League Player of the Season.
- In September 2013, it was announced that Bale would be transferring to the Spanish club Real Madrid for a world-record fee.
- Despite having a debut affected by injuries, Bale quickly found his form and was soon dubbed “The Cannon” by Spanish media.
- In April 2014, Bale scored what is considered as one of the best goals in his career as he led Real Madrid to a 2-1 win over FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey Final.
- The next month, he contributed a goal as Real Madrid won the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final. He later helped the team win the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2014 UEFA Super Cup.
- After being injured in January 2016, Bale was benched for two months. He later won the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League in May.
- Another injury in November 2016 sidelined Bale for at least four months. Despite this, Madrid went on to win the 2016-17 La Liga, 2017 UEFA Super Cup, 2017 UEFA Champions League Final, 2017 FIFA Club World Cup, and the 2017 Supercopa de España.
- Bale contributed two goals as Madrid won the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final. They also won the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup.
- Despite winning the 2019-20 La Liga, reports said that Bale wished to leave the club as his playing time was limited.
- In September 2020, Bale was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur, returning to his former club.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Bale debuted for the Wales U17 Team in 2005. In 2006, he debuted for the U19, U21, and Senior Team.
- Because his grandmother is from England, Bale is qualified to represent the team. However, he previously stated that he would prefer to play for Wales.
- He helped Wales qualify for the UEFA Euro 2016.
- Bale is Wales’ all-time leading goalscorer.
- Though he expressed his desire to play for the Great Britain football team in the 2012 London Olympics, he withdrew after deciding to prioritize his recovery.
- Despite saying that he could not play for Team GB due to injuries, Bale participated in Tottenham’s pre-season tour, which coincided with Great Britain’s matches. Fans were angered by this, but the British Olympic Association ignored calls to sanction him.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- In 2019, Bale married Emma Rhys-Jones, who he had been engaged to since 2016.
- Gareth and Emma have three children. Their daughter Alba Violet was born on October 21, 2012. Their second daughter Nava Valentina was born March 22, 2016, and their third child, a son named Alex Charles, was born on May 8, 2018.
- Bale is sponsored by the sportswear brand Adidas.
- Bale does not consume alcohol, but he partly owns Elevens Bar & Grill in Cardiff.
- He is known for his love for golf, which he plays in his spare time.
- Bale reportedly trademarked his popular heart-shaped celebration.
