Personal Life and Interest
- On December 2, 1859, Georges Pierre Seurat was born in Paris, France to Antoine-Chrysostome Seurat, a customs official and Ernestine Faivre. He spent most of his childhood in Paris and got the chance to focus on art because of his wealthy family.
- He learnt the fundamentals of art through his uncle. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris and studied under Justin Lequien. For two years, young Georges drew in black and white.
- In 1878, he enrolled at Ècole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was trained by Henri Lehmann.
- Seurat was often frustrated by the school’s strict academic method. After a while, he dropped out from school and studied on his own. Initially, the works of Puvis de Chavannes impressed his artistic mind.
- In 1879, Seurat visited the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition where he saw works of Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. In addition, he became interested in the science behind art after reading Michel-Eugène Chevreul’s Principle of Harmony and Contrast of Colors.
Georges Seurat Painting Career
- After leaving school, he joined the military for a year and set up his own art studio. In 1883, he exhibited his drawing at the Salon. The following year, he co-founded the Salon des Indèpendants after one of his paintings was denied in the exhibit.
- In 1884, Seurat painted Bathers at Asnières followed by A Sunday on La Grande Jatte in 1886. The latter was first exhibited in the Eighth Impressionist Exhibition and was considered as one of his most famous works.
- Seurat showed in his paintings a style consisting of points in pure color instead of blending colors together on a palette. Today it is called Pointillism or Divisionism.
- In 1888, he painted female subjects in his The Models, followed by Young Woman Powdering Herself in 1889. In addition, Seurat also painted scenes of circuses and nightlife like Circus Sideshow in 1888, Le Chahut in 1890, and The Circus in 1891.
Later Life, Death, and Legacy
- Together with Paul Signac, Seurat pioneered a new painting style through Pointillism. His artistic style influenced several of his contemporaries like Vincent van Gogh and Edgar Degas.
- On March 29, 1891, Georges Seurat died of either pneumonia or meningitis, at age of 31. His body was interred at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
- His A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is viewed as an iconic work of the late 19th century. It is now house at the Art Institute of Chicago.
- In 1984, Stephen Sondheim one of Seurat’s believers wrote the musical Sunday in the Park with George.
