Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is an American lawyer and politician who was the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. She is the wife of Former US President Bill Clinton. She was the first woman to be nominated for president of the United States by the Democratic Party. She is the first former US First Lady to win the popular vote of the Democratic Party nomination.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
- Hillary Rodham was born to Hugh Rodham, a businessman, and Dorothy Howell, a housewife, on October 26, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois.
- She is of English, Welsh, Dutch, French Canadian, and Scottish descent.
- Her upbringing was of a United Methodist background.
- She had two younger brothers: Hugh and Tony.
- Hillary was an active public school student and participated in extracurriculars like swimming and softball.
- She went to Maine East High School and became part of the student council and the school’s newspaper.
- She attended Main South High School for her senior year and was voted “Most Likely To Succeed.”
- She graduated in the top five percent of her class in 1965.
- Upon her high school graduation, she attended Wellesley College and majored in political science.
- Rodham engaged in political movements in college as is evident in her support of the presidential nomination of Eugene McCarthy.
- She was voted president of the Wellesley College Government Association in 1968 and served for a year.
- She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with departmental honors in political science in 1969.
- Afterwards, Hillary enrolled in Yale Law School.
CAREER BEGINNINGS
- In Yale, she worked at the Yale Child Study Center, served at the Yale Review of Law and Social Action, and took on cases at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
- She also provided legal advice for the poor and underprivileged at New Haven Legal Services.
- In 1970, she had the privilege to work for Senator Walter Mondale’s Subcommittee on Migratory Labor as part of the Marian Wright Edelman’s Washington Research Project,
Hillary’s first job in politics was her recruitment by political advisor Anne Wexler to work on the 1970 campaign of Connecticut U.S. Senate candidate Joseph Duffey. - In 1974, Hillary taught at the University of Arkansas School of Law and took part into the inquiry leading to the possible impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon.
BILL CLINTON’S FIRST LADY
- In 1971, Hillary began dating Bill Clinton who was also a law student.
- When Hillary interned at the law firm of Treuhaft, Walker, and Burnstein in California, Bill Clinton moved there to live with her.
- Following Hillary’s graduation from Yale in 1973, Clinton proposed marriage to her but she declined.
- Eventually, Hillary said yes to persistent Bill Clinton. They got married on October 11, 1975.
- She supported her husband when he was elected governor of Arkansas in 1978. She began to work on advocacies for children and the underprivileged.
- Hillary played a big role in Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992 as she gave speeches, engaged people, and made TV appearances.
- When Bill Clinton was elected president, Hillary set up her own office in the White House and Bill appointed her to be the Task Force head on National Health Care, for which she was heavily criticized as she was not considered a government official.
- Hillary gave birth to their only child – a daughter named Chelsea on February 27, 1980.

- Following her marriage to Clinton in 1975, she worked at Rose Law Firm, in which she became partner later on, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
- She was named by the National Law Journal as one of the nation’s 100 most influential lawyers, not just once, but twice.
- In Arkansas, she made waves in public service: she worked as the head of the Arkansas Education Standards Committee; founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families; and was named Arkansas Woman of the Year.
- She published her first book entitled “It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us” in 1996.
- In 1999, she launched her candidacy for the U.S. Senate and became the first lady to get elected into office.
- As senator, she focused on children rights, health care reform, and armed services.
- In 2008, she sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
- She campaigned against competitor Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.
- She was defeated by Obama for the party’s nomination. Obama went on to win the general election and became the first African-American US president.
- Clinton sought another Democratic nomination in 2016 and won.
- However, she lost the presidential election and Republican opponent Donald Trump won.
- Her loss launched the political organization Onward Together committed to fundraise for progressive political groups.
