THE GOALIE’S CHILDHOOD
- Hope Amelia Solo is the daughter of Italian-American Vietnam War veteran Jeffrey Solo and Judy Lynn (née Shaw).
- She was born on July 30, 1981 in Richland, Washington.
- At 12, she already expressed her desire to become a professional soccer player, even though the option wasn’t really available for women back then.
- She studied at ‘Richland High School’, where she scored 109 goals and led her team to three back-to-back league title wins from 1996 to 1998 and a state championship win in 1998.
- During her school days, Solo also used to play for the ‘Three Rivers Soccer Club’ in the Tri-Cities.
THE YOUNGSTER’S CAREER
- Of all the college invitations, Hope attended the University of Washington from 1999 to 2002 where she majored in speech communications.
- Coach Lesle Gallimore switched Hope from forward to a goalkeeper, and that’s when she decided to stay as a goalkeeper for the college.
- Solo became the top goalkeeper in Pac-10 history and finished her collegiate career as Washington’s all-time leader in shutouts, saves, and goals against average.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER
- Hope Solo was selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2003 WUSA Draft by the Philadelphia Charge after college.
- Solo was named NCAA All-American in her sophomore and senior years.
- She was also the first keeper nominated for a Hermann Award.
- Before the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Solo moved to Göteborg, Sweden in February 2004 to play for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC, the top division of women’s soccer in Sweden.
- In 2005, she played for Olympique Lyonnais in the French First Division.
- She was the substitute goalkeeper for the US 2003 Summer Olympics campaign.
- In 2005, she was promoted as the primary choice, which led to her record of the longest undefeated streak by a US goalkeeper with 55 games from March 7, 2002 to July 16, 2008.
- In 2005, she played for Olympique Lyonnais in the French First Division. She made seven appearances for the French club.
- Solo played in 22 WPS matches in 2010 for both the Athletica and the Beat and was the league-leader in saves with 104.
- Solo was part of the starting line-up of the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches, but was benched in favour of veteran Briana Scurry in the semi-final match, which the US lost to Brazil 4-0.
- At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she led the U.S. women’s team and won the gold medal by defeating Brazil 1–0 in extra time.
- On August 9, 2011, Solo won her second Olympic gold medal with the United States women’s national soccer team in a 2–1 defeat of Japan.
- In 2010 and 2011, she signed with ‘Atlanta Beat’ and ‘MagicJack’, respectively. She received a $2,500 fine for her remarks against the match officials and the league following her team’s loss to ‘Washington Freedom’.
- On FIFA 2011, Solo won the “Golden Glove” award for best goalkeeper, and the “Bronze Ball” award for her overall performance. This followed in 2015.
- On July 9, 2016, Hope Solo earned her 100th international shutout, 150th career win, and 197th cap in a friendly game against South Africa.
- On August 24, 2016, US Soccer suspended Solo for six months and terminated her national team contract.
PERSONAL LIFE
- Hope Solo showed off another side of her personality in 2011, when she competed on Dancing with the Stars.
- In August 2012, Solo published an autobiography with Ann Killion entitled, Solo: A Memoir of Hope, giving fans an inside look at her life and career.
- Solo is a representative of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded to “advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity”.
- In 2012, Solo was one of 15 professional athletes including Shaun Phillips, Tim Lincecum, Ray Rice, and others who participated in Popchips’ Game Changers program.
