BIOGRAPHY
- Jordan Alexander Spieth was born in Dallas, Texas on July 27, 1993. His father, Shawn Spieth, has a media start-up, and his mother, Mary Christine Spieth, worked as a computer engineer.
- Spieth has a younger brother who plays basketball at Brown University, named Steven. He also has a younger sister named Ellie, who was born with a genetic disorder.
- At an early age, Spieth was already very interested in sports. He played soccer, baseball, basketball, and football. While playing these different sports, Spieth realized that he found golf more fascinating than any other .
- At the age of 12, Spieth’s interest in golf started to become more profound. He enrolled in the Brookhaven Country Club and learned how to play golf from Cameron McCormick, who was a former golf pro.
SPIETH’S AMATEUR CAREER
- In 2009, Jordan Spieth had his big break in his amateur career to win the US Junior Amateur Championship. Before this, Spieth was the runner-up in the Junior PGA Championship in 2008 and 2009. He was also named Rolex Junior Player of the year.
- In 2011, Spieth won the Junior Amateur Championship again, and became the second player to win the award twice in history. The American Junior Golf Association ranked Spieth as #1 with his excellent performances.
- In 2010, after Spieth was granted an exemption to play and joined the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship, a PGA Tour event. Spieth was tied at rank at the end of the tournament. The following year, he joined the same event and tied for 32nd place.
- For his collegiate career, Spieth was enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin. He won the NCAA Championship during his freshman year. After this, Spieth received the All-Big 12 Team Honors, Big 12 Player of the Year, and the Freshman of the Year Awards.
- In 2012, as an amateur player, Spieth joined the US Open after a player decided to withdraw. Spieth was tied for 21st spot, which made his ranking shoot up to first place in the World Amateur Golf rankings.
SPIETH’S PROFESSIONAL CAREER
- During Spieth’s sophomore year in college, he decided to go pro at 19 years old. Before the start of the 2013 season, Spieth signed a sponsorship deal with Under Armour and BioSteel Sports Supplements.
- After the Farmers Insurance Open, his first tournament, Spieth finished second in the Puerto Rico Open in March.
- Spieth won against the defending champion, Dustin Johnson, during the John Deere Classic in July 2013, making him the fourth-youngest player to win the PGA Tournament.
- Spieth’s win earned him full PGA Tour member status and granted him a place in the FedEx Cup and the next three majors. He was played in the Wyndham Championship but lost in the playoffs.
- During the Deutsche Bank Championship, Spieth came fourth. In September 2013, after winning the PGA Rookie of the Year Award, Spieth placed 22nd in the Official World Golf Rankings at the end of his season.
- In April 2014, Spieth was not able to win the Masters. However, he became the youngest player in history to be the runner-up in the Masters. After this, Spieth shot up to the top 10 in the world rankings.
- After Spieth played in the PGA Championship, he became the youngest American player to play in the Ryder Cup. He then won a PGA Tour of Australasia, the Emirates Australia Open.
- Spieth’s win in Australia made him claim the Hero World Challenge Title. In March 2015, he won the Valspar Champion and moved up to sixth in the world.
- During the 2015 Masters, he became the youngest golfer to lead during the first round and the second-youngest golfer to win. With this, his World Ranking shot up to #2.
- During the US Open in 2015, Spieth defeated Dustin Johnson, making him the first player since 2002 and sixth player ever to win the US Open and Masters in the same year. Also, this win made him became the youngest player to win the US Open since 1923.
- After placing second in the PGA Championship, Spieth was ranked #1 in the official golf rankings. The tour sealed his win as the FedEx Champion of 2015 and awarded him a $10 million bonus.
- Spieth was awarded the PGA Tour Player of the Year, Player of the Year awards, Byron Nelson Award, Vardon Trophy, and the Arnold Palmer Award.
- After an outstanding season in 2015, Spieth won 3 titles in his 2016 season, the Hyundai Tournament of Championships, Dean & DeLuca Invitational, and the Emirates Australia Open.
- For his next season, the 2017 season, Spieth began finishing third at the SBS Tournament of Champions. He also won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February of 2017.
- After the US Open, Spieth won the Travelers Championship for the first time and won the Open Championship in July 2017. He finished his 2017 season by winning the President Cup.
- In 2018 and 2019 season, Spieth experienced a trophy drought and started his 2020 season by placing 8th in the CJ Cup.
