EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
- Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York and was brought up in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
- Zuckerberg was raised in Reform Judaism by his parents Edward and Karen Zuckerberg.
- His father is a dentist and his mother is a psychiatrist.
- He was the second of four children.
- He has three sisters: Randi, Donna, and Arielle.
- Zuckerberg excelled in high school. He first attended Ardsley High School, then transferred to Phillips Exeter Academy, a private preparatory school in New Hampshire, after two years.
FIRST PROGRAMS
- Zuckerberg became interested in computers and began writing software at an early age.
- His father taught him Atari BASIC programming which he used to create a messaging program when he was 13 years old. The program was called Zucknet.
- Zucknet allowed the computers in his house and his father’s dental office to communicate via Ping, which was the prototype of AOL’s Instant Messenger.
- He also wrote computer games, like a version of Monopoly for computers.
- Zuckerberg went on to program a music player during his senior year at Phillips Exeter Academy. It was called Synapse Media Player and used artificial intelligence to learn about a user’s listening patterns and recommend other music.
- Synapse received extremely positive reviews after Zuckerberg posted it online on AOL.
- Although Microsoft and AOL offered to buy Synapse for $1 million and hire Mark Zuckerberg as a software developer, Zuckerberg turned down the offer.
- He also became a fencing captain at the academy and earned a diploma in classic literature.
- In 2002, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied computer science and psychology.
TIME AT HARVARD
- By the time he was at Harvard University, Zuckerberg had already gained a reputation for being a skilled programmer.
- In his sophomore year at Harvard, he developed a program which helped students decide which classes to take based on other students’ choices. The program was called CourseMatch.
- Shortly after, he wrote a program that allowed students to select the best-looking person from a batch of photos. The program was called FaceMash.
- FaceMash gained so much popularity that it crashed the servers of Harvard’s network, causing students to have problems connecting to the internet.
- Some students, especially women, also complained that their photos were being used in the program without their permission and that the program was offensive.
- Zuckerberg then issued a public apology and Harvard put him on probationary status.
- Facebook is now the most used and known social networking website in the world.
- It was developed by Zuckerberg, with the help of his roommates, when he was still a student at Harvard in 2004.
- It was first called The Facebook and was meant to be a directory of students at Harvard.
- Before he founded The Facebook, Zuckerberg worked on a similar idea with Harvard senior students Divya Narendra, Cameron Winklevoss, and Tyler Winklevoss.
- Their idea was to create a social networking site called Harvard Connection, which was basically a dating website created from the information from Harvard’s student networks.
- Zuckerberg soon dropped out of the project to build his own idea, which his friends helped create.
- His friends were Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz, both economics majors, Andrew McCollum, a computer science student, and Chris Hughes, a literature and history student.
- The Facebook was a website that allowed users to create a profile, communicate with other users, and upload photos on their pages.
- They launched the website on February 2004. They ran the site out of a dorm room at Harvard University until June 2004.
- By the end of 2004, 1 million users had already signed up on The Facebook.
- They renamed it “Facebook” in 2005 and relocated to an office in Palo Alto, California.
- That same year, venture capital firm Accel Partners invested $12.7 million into the enterprise.
- From being just a social directory used at Harvard, Zuckerberg went on to widen the scope of the website to other colleges, universities, and high schools.
- By December 2005, Facebook had approximately 5.5 million users.
LEGAL ISSUES
- In 2006, the founders of Harvard Connection sued Zuckerberg, claiming that he stole their idea.
- Zuckerberg denied the claims and a settlement of $65 million was reached between the two parties.
NET WORTH AND PERSONAL LIFE
- Since its founding in 2005, Facebook has grown to be the largest and most widely used social networking site in the world.
- In 2007, he became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at 23 years old.
- In 2012, Zuckerberg’s net worth was estimated at more than $19 billion. As of February 2019, his net worth is estimated to be nearly $82 billion.
- Zuckerberg met Priscilla Chan, a medical student, during his sophomore year at Harvard. They were married on May 19, 2012 and now have two children: Maxima (born December 1, 2015) and August (born August 28, 2017).
