YOUNG BLOOD
- At age 11, Neymar joined Santos FC and news of his ability reached Europe, with Real Madrid C.F. offering him an opportunity to develop his football skills when he turned 14. However, Santos’ management reportedly convinced Neymar to stay by offering him a large bonus.
- Young Neymar made his senior debut for Santos FC in 2009 and lived up to expectations as he was awarded the league’s Best Young Player. A year later he emerged as a superstar, helping Santos win the league and Copa do Brasil championships en route to the first of three straight titles and 4 straight Player of the Year awards.
- That same season, he made his debut with the senior national team and sported a Mohawk-style haircut, which immediately gained the attention and love of younger football fans.
- In 2011, the snazzy forward scoredwhat would be voted the FIFA Goal of the Year and led his team to its first Copa Libertadores championship in 48 years.
- Neymar scored his 100th professional goal on his 20th birthday in 2012 and finished the year with a career-best total of 43. Although Santos won its third straight league title, the young star was subject to criticism when Brazil lost the 2012 Summer Olympics gold-medal game to an underdog Mexico team.
FROM BRAZIL TO BARCELONA
- In May 2013, the Brazilian superstar announced he was making the leap to Europe with a shift to FC Barcelona, a dynamic club that featured Argentine star striker Lionel Messi and several members of the Spanish national team.
- Neymar lived up to his hype playing with Barcelona, giving the domineering Spanish club yet another gifted versatile talent, and scored 39 goals during the 2014-15 season, helping the club claim the league, domestic and European Cup titles. - For all his individual brilliance, Neymar still faced the question of whether he could lift his teammates to glory on the international stage, as he was suspended during the 2015 Copa America, effectively quashing Brazil’s chances of making an extended run.
- The following year, he decided to sit out of the tournament to stay rested and healthy as he prepared for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a move that worked wonders: Neymar delivered several key goals to help his team, before scoring the winning penalty kick to give Brazil its first men’s football gold medal.
