BIOGRAPHY
- Ning Zetao was born in Zhengzhou, Henan, on March 6, 1993. He is the child of Ning Feng and Liu Wenhong. Ning Zetao was born into a military family. His father, Ning Feng, served in the Chinese military’s air force for four years before working at a state broadcasting company, while his mother served in the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force.
- At the age of 8, Ning started to learn to swim. However, before that, he even feared washing his hair. To help him overcome his fear of water and improve his physical health, his parents decided to enrol him in a swimming school.
- Ning was a quick learner. His local coach, Guo Hongyan, noticed how he learned different strokes and techniques in a short period. As a result, his coach talked to his parents and persuaded them to allow Ning to train under her guidance.
- Ning became part of the Henan provincial swimming team at the age of 11. Three years later, he was accepted to the PLA Navy’s swimming team. He then started training under a well-known coach, Ye Jin, up until today.
- Originally, Ning trained for the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley races. However, he suffered from chronic bone calcification on his right knee that made him switch to sprint freestyle.
- Following his family’s military background, Ning also served as a lieutenant in the Chinese Navy.
EARLY SWIMMING CAREER
- In October 2009, Ning competed for his first National Games at the age of 16. He advanced to the 400-meter medley final and finished the event in 8th place.
- During the Chinese National Swimming Championship in Wuhan, China, in April 2011, Ning recorded his first competition in a sprint freestyle event. He reached the 100-meter free final and came 4th in a 50.005-second record.
- Two years later, at the same tournament, Ning won over the two-time defending champion, Lv Zhiwu. He achieved his first National Championship in the 100-meter freestyle in his hometown. He also set a new national record with a time of 48.60 seconds. Additionally, his victory made sprint freestyle dominant in China.
- In September 2013, at the 12th Chinese National Games, Ning broke his record and established a new Asian record of 48.27 seconds. The following day, Ning set a new Asian record for the 50-meter free at 21.91 seconds, continuing his record-breaking and outstanding performance.
- In October 2013, at the East Asian Games, Ning earned himself a spot in the Chinese National Swimming team. It was because of his performance having placed first in both 100-meter and 50-meter free with a time of 48.41 and 22.20 seconds, respectively. Ning also won the Silver Medal in the 4 x 100-meter free relay.
- Ning competed for the Chinese Liberation Army in Tenero, Switzerland, in June 2014. He won a gold medal in the 100-meter free in a new CISM World record of 48.48 seconds.
- Ning earned another gold medal in the Men’s 50-meter free. He achieved two gold medals even though he was not in his best physical state, having a wrist injury before the competition.
THE ASIAN GAMES AND FINA WORLD CUP
- Ning competed at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games that also marked his first major championship outside China. Ning achieved his first gold in the Asian Games in the 50-meter free with a time of 21.95 seconds.
- Ning also defeated South Korea’s Park Tae-Hwan and Japan’s Shioura Shinri, setting a new Asian record of 47.70 seconds in the 100-meter free. He was the first Asian swimmer to break the 48-second barrier.
- Ning also led the China in the Men’s 4×100-meter medley relay to set a new Asian record of 3:13.47 and helped China win a gold medal with a time of 3:31.37.
- In October 2014, at the Chinese National Swimming Championship, Ning continued his dominance in the sprint freestyle. He broke his Incheon record of 47.70 with a new time of 47.65 in the 100-meter free.
- During the 2014 FINA Swimming World Cup, Yu Hexin, Suo Ran, and Lu Ying, together with Ning, who swam the fourth leg in the mixed 4x 50-meter medley relay, finished in first place with a record time of 1:40.10.
- During the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships, Ning swam the final leg in the mixed 4x 50-meter medley relay in which China finished in 6th place.
2015 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 2016 SUMMER OLYMPICS
- Ning entered the World Championships ranking as the fastest 100-meter freestyle swimmer of the year. During the final 100-meter free, Ning beat the top qualifier, Cameron McEvoy, by just 0.11 seconds. Ning’s recorded time of 47.84 was considered the best of the year and the world’s fastest time.
- Ning went to the Olympic Games for the first time. In the individual race, Ning finished in 30th place in the Men’s 50-meter freestyle and 12th place in the Men’s 100-meter freestyle.
- In the relay, Ning and his team were disqualified due to their teammate’s false start.
AWARDS OF NING ZETAO
- Ning won the CCTV Sports Award for Best Male Athlete in 2014 because of his sprint freestyle category achievements. He also won the same award in 2015 for his gold-winning performance at the 16th FINA World Championships in Russia.
