EARLY AND PERSONAL LIFE
- Born on July 1, 1961, Princess Diana became Lady Diana Spencer after her father, Edward Spencer, Viscount Althorp inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975.
- Young Diana was educated at Riddlesworth Hall in Norfolk and at West Heath Girls’ School. At the age of 16, she moved to Institut Alpin Videmanette, a finishing school in Rougemont, Switzerland. Despite being an academically below-average student, she excelled in sports and had a talent for music.
- The Spencers had a long and close relationship with the British Royal family. Diana’s maternal grandmother, Ruth, the Lady Fermoy, once become a lady-in-waiting to the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth.
- She had four siblings; two brothers and two sisters. One of her sisters once dated her future husband, Prince Charles.
AS MEMBER OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY
- Diana became acquainted with Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne in 1977, who was 13 years older than her.
- On July 29, 1981, the couple was married at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, attended by 3,500 invited guests and watched on television by almost 1 billion people across the world.
- Upon her marriage, Diana gained the title Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales and ranked next to Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother.
- On June 21, 1982, Princess Diana gave birth to Prince William, and then Prince Henry on September 15, 1984.
- Princess Diana became highly involved in supporting and working for charities of various advocacies including helping the poor and unfortunate, the homeless, and people living with AIDS/HIV.
- Over the course of her marriage with Prince Charles, reports and speculations on both’s infidelity began to circulate.
- Moreover, Diana suffered from depression and bulimia.
- On December 9, 1992, British Prime Minister John Major announced the couple’s separation, which was finalized on August 28, 1996.
- Amidst the divorce, Diana maintained her popularity in the media. She spent her time with her sons and on numerous charitable institutions.
- When their marriage fell apart, Prince Charles reunited with Camilla Parker Bowles, his girlfriend prior to Diana. Diana was then linked to James Hewitt and allegedly James Gilbey.
- Although she lost the title Her Royal Highness after the divorce, Buckingham Palace maintained Diana’s membership of the Royal family since she was the mother of the second and third heir to the British throne.
DIANA’S CHARITY WORKS
- In 1987, Princess Diana was the first high-profile person who was photographed meeting people with AIDS/HIV.
- Among her publicized charities was over landmines in Angola, in 1997. Diana served as a volunteer in the International Red Cross and visited victims of landmines in hospitals. She also supported de-mining projects run by the HALO Trust.
- Princess Diana’s advocacy to stop landmines became influential as it resulted in the Ottawa treaty in 1997. Months after her death, her efforts to ban landmines was recognized by the Nobel Peace Prize.
DEATH AND CONTROVERSY
- On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana was involved in a car accident with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed and driver Henri Paul in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris. The death of Diana was blamed on the paparazzi chasing her.
- Trevor Rees-Jones, Fayed’s bodyguard was the only one who survived the crash.
- On September 6, 1997, Princess Diana’s funeral procession began at Kensington Palace. A ceremony was held at the Westminster Abbey which featured a eulogy from her brother, Earl Charles Spencer, and a performance from her friend Elton John. About 2.5 billion people watched the funeral on television.
- Her body was buried on her family’s estate in Althorp. The gravesite was decorated with four black swans and 36 oak trees.
- In 1999, reports emerged that the accident which caused Diana’s death was the driver’s fault as he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and antidepressant drugs.
- Another conspiracy theory circulated that it was an assassination plot by the Royal family.
- After her death, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was created which provides support to people who will benefit from palliative care, penal reform, and asylum. It was later integrated into The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2013.
- In honor of his mother, Prince William named his daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
- Despite being a commoner before her marriage with Prince Charles, Lady Diana was a member of the British aristocracy as she was a descendant of King Charles II through her father.
- Tracing her genealogy, Diana was related to Winston Churchill, and US Presidents George Washington, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, Millard Fillmore, Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and both Bush presidents.
- Princess Diana’s ring is made of 14 solitaire diamonds and a 12-carat sapphire, and is worn today by Kate Middleton, Prince William’s wife.
- At her funeral, Elton John recorder a new version of the song Candle in the Wind for Diana. It was originally a song for the actress Marilyn Monroe.
- She was an eight-time cover of “Time” magazine and more than 50 covers of the People’s magazine featured her.
