STERLING’S BIOGRAPHY
- Raheem Shaquille Sterling was born on December 9, 1994, in Kingston, Jamaica. His parents are Robert Rashford and Nadine Sterling. Sterling grew up in a poor family and in a crime-filled environment.
- At the age of five, Sterling and his mother emigrated to England. His father chose to stay in Jamaica. After moving to England, they still experienced financial problems. However, his mother still managed to raise him.
- At the age of eight, Sterling’s father was murdered. He felt anger and frustration with what happened, but he turned it into more optimistic decisions and focused on improving his football skills.
- Raheem Sterling played for the “Queens Park Rangers Football Club” from 2003 to 2010. The span of seven years playing for the football club helped him a lot in developing his career.
EARLY CAREER
- At the end of his time with the club, he was already recognized as a star player. He managed to grab the attention of several veteran and legendary footballers.
- Sterling played different positions, but most of his great performances emerged when he was playing as a natural winger (player who is at either of the two sides of the field). He became well-known for his speed and low center of gravity.
- In February 2010, Sterling was signed by Liverpool and was initially offered £600,000. However, Coach Rafael Benítez promised to increase the payment to about £5 million, depending on the games he played for the club’s first team.
- Sterling’s debut for the team ended in a draw against Hibernian F.C. He also played against Aston Villa in the Premier Academy League.
STERLING AT LIVERPOOL
- After a few more games, he became a substitute for Liverpool in an EPL game against Wigan Athletic in 2012. At the age of seventeen, he became the third-youngest player to ever play a match for Liverpool.
- Sterling made his debut in a qualifying game at the Europa League against Gomel. He registered his first goal in a friendly match against Bayern Leverkusen a week after his debut.
- In the Northwest Derby, Sterling started in a game for Liverpool against Manchester City, which resulted in a draw. Later on, he played regularly in games without being substituted.
- In October 2012, Sterling scored his first competitive goal for Liverpool in an EPL game against Reading. It made him the second-youngest Liverpool player to score in a competitive game for his team. In December 2012, he agreed to an extension to his contract with Liverpool.
- Sterling’s second season with Liverpool was exceptional. He managed to score a goal against notable opponents, such as the Tottenham Hotspurs, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
- As a result, he was nominated the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Sterling was also named Liverpool’s Player of the Month. At the end of the season, he was awarded Liverpool’s Young Player of the Year award.
- Sterling started his last season at Liverpool by helping Liverpool defeat the Tottenham Hotspurs in the 2014/15 season. He received Liverpool’s Player of the Month award for August. The following month, he made his debut in the Champions League.
- In December 2014, he recorded his 100th goal for Liverpool and received the Golden Boy Award. Sterling continued to perform well through the season and achieved the club’s Young Player of the Season for the second consecutive season. Sterling was again nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Season award.
STERLING AT MANCHESTER CITY
- Sterling refused to sign a new contract with Liverpool. He encountered a tight contract discussion with the club. It resulted in an interview with the BBC, which was voided by Liverpool. Manchester City made bids for £30 and £40 million for the player, but Liverpool turned down the deal because he as valued at £50 million.
- Sterling moved to Manchester City for £44 million, with £5 million add-ons in July 2015. He sealed a five-year contract and debuted as a player for the club against West Brom. In a game against Watford, Sterling scored his first goal for the City.
- Sterling scored his first hat trick (three goals in a single game) for the club in October 2015.
- A fear for every professional player is to experience an injury. Sterling suffered from a groin injury in March 2016 that resulted in keeping him on the sidelines for weeks. He was also excluded from the starting roster for Manchester City.
- Coach Guardiola began managing the team, and Sterling began playing regularly. During the 2016/17 season, he achieved the EPL Player of the Month award. In the next season, he scored 18 goals, and this is considered one of the best seasons in his career.
- In the 2018/19 season, he registered his 50th EPL game for Manchester City.
- In February 2019, he scored the winning goal for the City at the Carabao Cup. During March 2019, in a span of 13 minutes, he managed to achieve a hat trick.
- Sterling’s great performance resulted in him receiving the PFA Youngest Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year award. He was then also named to the PFA Team of the Year.
- During the 2019/20 season, he scored a hat trick in the Champions League.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Sterling was allowed to represent England at the U-17 World Cup held in 2011. Although he was not able to be substituted for the actual game, he debuted for the senior team in November 2012 in a friendly match against Sweden.
- Sterling also represented England at the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 Euros qualifiers, and the 2018 World Cup. At the 2019 Nationals League, he was also included as a part of Team England’s contingent.
- During the Euro 2020 qualifiers in March 2019, Sterling registered his first hat trick for England against the Czech Republic.
