EARLY LIFE
- Sergio Leonel Agüero del Castillo was born on June 2, 1988 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- His parents are Leonel Del Castillo and Adriana Agüero. Sergio is the second of seven children. His sisters are Yesica, Gabriela, Maira, and Daiana. His brothers Gastón del Castillo and Mauricio del Castillo also play football.
- He spent his childhood in Los Eucaliptus, Buenos Aires.
- His nickname “Kun” was given to him by his grandparents in reference to the character Kum-Kum from the anime Wanpaku Omukashi Kumu Kumu, which Agüero loved as a child.
- As a child, Agüero attracted the attention of various clubs. He joined the youth system of Club Atlético Independiente when he was nine.
CLUB CAREER
- Kun moved up the ranks at Independiente. At fifteen, he became the youngest player to debut in an Argentine Primera Division match.
- He soon solidified his position in the first team. Agüero’s performance in the 2005–06 Primera División attracted the attention of European clubs.
- In May 2006, Agüero transferred to the Spanish club Atlético Madrid for around 20 million euros.
- He was the third-highest scorer in the 2007–08 La Liga. Kun’s success continued as he became a regular goalscorer for the club.
- He assisted both goals that won his club the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League. He also scored the winning goal that won Atlético the 2010 UEFA Super Cup. Once more, Kun was the third-highest scorer in the 2010–11 La Liga.
- In July 2011, the English club Manchester City signed Agüero. He became a reliable goal scorer and was declared Manchester City’s Player of the Year during his first season, after he helped the club win the Premier League.
- Manchester City won the 2012 FA Community Shield.
- The 2013–14 season was successful for Kun as he was declared the October Premier League Player of the Month. His club also won the 2014 Football League Cup and the Premier League title. They retained their Premier League title in the 2017–18, 2018–19, and 2020–21 seasons.
- He was declared the Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year in 2014. He was the 2014–15 Premier League top scorer.
- Agüero was named the Premier League Player of the Month for January 2018. He helped Manchester City win the 2018 EFL Cup Final and the 2018 FA Community Shield.
- In May 2021, Agüero transferred to the La Liga club FC Barcelona. He scored his first goal for the club against Real Madrid.
- On December 15, 2021, Agüero announced his retirement from football, citing heart problems.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- He debuted for the Argentina U17 at the 2004 U16 South American Championship, where they finished third. He helped his country’s U20 team win the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championships.
- In 2006, he debuted for the senior team of Argentina.
- Kun performed well at the 2007 FIFA U20 World Cup, where Argentina finished first.
- He was the top goalscorer and was also named the best player of the tournament.
- Agüero helped his country win the gold medal for football at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
- He participated in the 2011 Copa América. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Argentina finished second.
- Kun regularly provided goals and assists at the 2015 Copa América, where his team finished second. The following year, Agüero participated in the Copa América Centenario, where they lost to Chile in the final, for the second consecutive time.
- Kun participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also helped his country finish third at the 2019 Copa América. They finished as champions of the 2021 Copa América.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- In 2008, Agüero married Giannina Maradona, the daughter of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona. In 2009, they welcomed a son, Benjamín. They divorced in 2012.
- Agüero was granted Spanish nationality in 2010.
- He is close to Lionel Messi.
- Kun has an autobiography entitled Born to Rise.
- During the football break in 2020, Agüero became a game streamer on Twitch.
