PRATCHETT’S BIOGRAPHY
- Sir Terence David John Pratchett was born on April 28, 1948, in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England. Terry Pratchett’s father was David Pratchett, an engineer, and his mother, Eileen Pratchett, was a secretary.
- Pratchett’s major source of education was Beaconsfield Public Library.
- He attended High Wycombe Technical High School instead of the local grammar school, because he felt that woodwork would be more fun than Latin.
- During this time, Pratchett had no dreams and plans about what he wanted to do with his life. He remembered himself as a “nondescript student“, meaning he lacked distinction as a student.
- However, Pratchett had an interest in radios. He and his father were included in the Chiltern Amateur Radio Club in the early 1960s. Their joint handle was the “Home-brew R1155”. At this time, his interest in computers developed.
- At the age of thirteen, Terry Pratchett had published his first short story in a school magazine called the “Technical Cygnet”. His story was entitled “The Hades Business”. After two years, the story was published commercially in Science Fantasy magazine.
- Terry Pratchett earned five O-levels and started A-level courses in art, history, and English. At the age of 17, he decided to leave school after a job opportunity came up with the Bucks Free Press in 1965. While working with the Press, he took the two-year National Council for the Training of Journalists proficiency course. He finished top in the exams and passed with an A level in English.
- In October 1968, he married Lyn Purves at the Congregational Church in Gerrards Cross. At this time, he also began working on his first novel, entitled “The Carpet People”. It was published in the year 1971.
- However, it was extremely revised and republished in 1992. It is a lighthearted tale for children with a plot on the exploits of two brothers who lived inside a carpet and battled the evil concept of Fray.
- Terry Pratchett continued to work as a newspaper journalist and then in public relations during the 1970s and most of the 1980s. Terry published two more independent novels, The Dark Side of the Sun in 1976 and Strata in 1981, before publishing the first book in his Discworld series, The Colour of Magic in 1983. It was the start of a phenomenally successful series for Pratchett.
- With The Light Fantastic and Equal Rites in 1986, the Discworld Series continued. Equal Rites was a novel about developing ideas about feminism. It was also the most popular book that broadcasted on Woman’s Hour. In 1987, Terry Pratchett published Mort as a part of the series and left his office job to become a full-time writer.
DISCWORLD SERIES
- The Discworld series was a collection of ironic fantasy novels. The setting is on a disc-shaped world that rests on the backs of four giant elephants atop an enormous turtle. It was very popular worldwide. He published one or more almost every year into the early 21st century.
- The Discworld series also emerged as video games, plays, drama adaptations, and many supplemental volumes, including the books of maps of Discworld. The series was originally for adult audiences.
- However, it also became popular with children. Pratchett encompassed novels that were set on Discworld and aimed at younger audiences specifically.
- In addition to the Discworld Series, Terry Pratchett published many other novels for children. The Bromeliad Trilogy from 1989-1990 was about four-inch-tall aliens living on Earth, and the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy was published in 1992-1996. It is about a young video gamer aficionado who finds himself in fantastic situations.
- In 1996, The Times reported that Pratchett became the bestselling author in the United Kingdom. He was also appointed OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List.
- Additionally, he also published Dodger, which relays a young man’s adventures in Victorian London, where he encountered a Dickensian array of characters.
- The Long Earth in 2012 with Stephen Baxter and The Long War in 2013 also with Baxter were concerned with the consequences of the discovery that humans can access numerous parallel Earths. Lastly, Dragons at Crumbling Castle, published in 2014, was a collection of comic children stories about a young boy’s attempts to defeat a group of dragons.
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
- In 2007, Terry Pratchett developed a rare form of Alzheimer’s Disease known as Posterior Cortical Atrophy. Pratchett decided to announce that he was diagnosed with the said disease and began his campaign to raise awareness for the disease. In the following year, Pratchett donated a million dollars to Alzheimer’s research.
- In 2009, he appeared on a BBC documentary that talked about his life with the disease. Even though the disease affected his abilities in writing and reading, he continued to publish books regularly.
- In 2010, he became a professor of English at the University of Dublin.
- In 2014, A Slip of the Keyboard incorporated his earlier non-fiction writings with his reflections on his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and about contemporary social ills.
- In 2015, Terry Pratchett passed away at his home in Wiltshire, with his family and his pet cat asleep on his bed. Before he died, he had finished one final Discworld novel, The Shepherd’s Crown, and it was published after his death.
