EARLY LIFE
- Zlatan was born on October 3, 1981, in Malmö, Sweden, to Sefik Ibrahimović and Jurka Gravić. His father is Muslim of Bosnian descent, and his mother is Catholic of Croatian and Albanian descent. Zlatan describes himself as a Catholic. His parents are immigrants who came to Sweden seeking a better life.
- Zlatan has three sisters named Sanela, Violeta, and Monika, and two brothers named Sapko and Aleksander. His half-brother Sapko died of an illness in 2014.
- After receiving a pair of football boots, 6-year-old Zlatan started playing football.
- As a young boy, he played for different local clubs. He played for FBK Balkan with fellow immigrant children, Malmö BI, and BK Flagg. As a teenager, he played for local club Malmö FF. His football idols were Brazilian star Ronaldo and Argentine player Gabriel Batistuta.
- Zlatan’s family was by no means wealthy, and he had a difficult childhood. At 15, he considered quitting football in order to work at his hometown docks, but was convinced to try pursuing football as a professional career.
CLUB CAREER
- By 1999, Zlatan was set to play for Malmö FF’s senior team. Though his team fell to the second division in his first season, they were more successful in the 2000-2001 season.
- By that time, Zlatan had already caught the attention of several teams, including English club Arsenal. He later transferred to Dutch club Ajax in 2001 for almost 9 million Euros.
- During his first months with the team, Zlatan got little playing time. When Ajax’s coach was changed to Ronald Koeman, Zlatan became a lineup regular. Ajax later won the Eredivisie championship and KNVB Cup.
- In the 2003-2004 season, Ajax won the championship once more, with Zlatan as one of the league’s top scorers. After winning Goal of the Year by Eurosport and being compared to football greats, Zlatan gained more popularity among fans.
- In 2004, he transferred to Italian club Juventus for 16 million Euros. He would remain there for two years.
- He performed well in his first season, and was later named the Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year. In 2005, he was recognized as Sweden’s best football player when he won the Guldbollen.
- In 2006, after a poor performance which led to fans’ frustration, and a league scandal that led to Juventus being relegated to a lower division, Zlatan left the club.
- He moved to Inter Milan, an Italian club he supported as a teenager. He performed well in his first season and ended up as the top scorer for the league champions, garnering 15 goals.
- The team defended their championship in the 2007-2008 season, with Zlatan as a top scorer once more.
- For two consecutive years, Zlatan was awarded the Serie A Footballer of the Year and Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year.
- During his last season with the club in 2008-2009, he ended up as the entire league’s top scorer.
- In July 2009, Ibrahimović moved to FC Barcelona. He performed well during his first season as a consistent scorer for the team. However, he had a bad relationship with his coach Pep Guardiola. Zlatan left the team in 2010.
- Zlatan was loaned to AC Milan in August 2010, marking a return to Italy.
- Though he was banned from several matches due to bad behavior, Zlatan eventually became a crucial player for the team. He ended his stint with the team as Serie A’s top scorer.
- From 2012 to 2016, Zlatan played for Paris Saint-Germain. In 2013, PSG won the Ligue 1 title. Zlatan finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer and Player of the Season, which he would consistently achieve throughout his stay in Paris.
- Zlatan played for Manchester United from 2016 to 2018. Though sidelined due to an injury, his team eventually won the Europa League.
- He moved to LA Galaxy in 2018 and was given the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award as well as the MLS Goal of the Year Award.
- In 2019, Zlatan returned to AC Milan with the option to stay there until 2021.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- At the international level, Zlatan is eligible to represent Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia, but he chose Sweden, who he debuted for at the senior level in 2001. His first World Cup was in 2002.
- Though Sweden qualified for the 2006 World Cup, they were knocked out after a loss to Germany.
- Though they performed well, Sweden did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
- Zlatan captained the team during the Euro 2012 qualification. Sweden were eliminated during the group stage, but Zlatan was considered one of the tournament’s best players.
- In 2013, he won the FIFA Puskas Award for Goal of the Year.
- Sweden failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
- Zlatan announced his retirement from international football in 2016. Despite fans’ desire for him to play for Sweden in the 2018 World Cup, Zlatan was not called up for the team.
- As a forward and offense player for Sweden, Zlatan contributed many goals and assists. Zlatan is Sweden’s leading goalscorer.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- Zlatan’s wife and partner is named Helena Seger. They have two sons, namely Maximilian (born in 2006) and Vincent (born in 2008).
- He is fluent in Swedish, English, Spanish, Bosnian and Italian.
- Zlatan is skilled at taekwondo, which he learned as a young boy.
- Zlatan has a lot of tattoos as he is interested in body art.
- The documentary Becoming Zlatan (2016) and autobiography I Am Zlatan (2011) shed details about his early life.
- He has stated that he does not drink alcohol.
- Zlatan’s hometown in Sweden has a statue of him.
- In his hometown, he set up a “Zlatan Court” where local kids can play football.
- Fans often call him by his nickname “Ibra”.
- Zlatan has often used his platform to raise awareness about social issues. He has also contributed to several charitable causes.
- In 2015, he campaigned for the United Nations World Food Programme.
- In October 2020, he successfully returned to the playing field after recovering from COVID-19.
