About Adelaide
- Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. A 3260 sq. km city, located in the southeast of South Australia on the east coast of the Gulf St. Vincent at the base of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The terrain ranges from flat plains to steep hills in the East and South.
- The city has a Mediterranean climate, which means it has hot, dry summers and cool winters with moderate rainfall. June is the wettest month of the year, while December and January are the hottest months.
- According to the 2016 census, 75.4% of Adelaide people use the English language at home. Some people here speak Italian, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Cantonese.
- Half of the population of Adelaide identifies themselves as Christian. Twenty-eight percent of them expressed no religious affiliation making this city one of Australia’s least religious cities.
- Adelaide was established as a British colony and they have a very English culture. However, the city has attracted immigrants from other parts of Europe, including Germans. The first German Lutherans brought vine cuttings that they used to found the acclaimed wineries of the Barossa Valley.
- In the 1960s-1970s, Adelaide’s arts scene bloomed with the founding of the renowned Adelaide Festival of Arts and the construction of the Adelaide Festival Center, South Australian Film Corporation, and the State Opera of South Australia.
- Adelaidean love their sports so much that they built Adelaide Oval. This stadium was established in 1871 and hosted its first cricket match in 1884. It has hosted 16 different sports as well as music concerts and major events.
- Today, Adelaide is a flourishing city with a population of about 1.3 million.
History
- The Kauna tribe were the first people to live in the Adelaide area. They called it Tandanya, which means the Place of Red Kangaroo.
- In December 1836, the British declared the Adelaide area the new colony in South Australia for free people and not convicts. The officials named it after the wife of King George IV.
- Adelaide’s first governor arrived on December 28, 1838, along with its first British and Irish settlers. But in the mid 19th century, many Germans also settled in Adelaide and its surrounding area. In 1840, Adelaide was inhabited by 2000 people, which grew to over 14,000 after ten years. In 1900, Adelaide had 162,000 inhabitants.
- In 1842, plans to abandon the colony emerged due to incompetent governance and the clashing of ideas among the free-thinking settlers.
- The colony depended on land sales and did not get any funds from the British crown. In 1845, the colony’s condition started to improve as the settlers had established their crop and livestock trade independently.
- In 1840, Adelaide was the first city to become incorporated. The first mayor was James Hurtle Fisher. In the same year, The Royal Adelaide Hospital was founded.
- During the 19th century, famous buildings were built, such as the Holy Trinity Church, the Old Adelaide Gaol, the Government House, and St. Francis Xavier Cathedral.
- The Adelaide Townhall was erected in 1866 and the Adelaide General Post office in 1872. In 1878 St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Edmund Wright House were built.
- The city’s inhabitants were able to capitalize on the fertility of the surrounding plains, easy access to the Murrays lowlands east and southeast, and mineral deposits in the nearby hills, which also helped the city’s growth. The city was an early agricultural marketing center and became industrialized with vehicle components, machinery, textiles, and chemicals factories.

- Adelaide boasts exemplary structures, wide boulevards, and proximity to nature. Being a small city, it will not take you too much time to explore the wonders this city has to offer.
- Adelaide brought nature closer with their Cleland Wildlife Park, Adelaide Zoo that accommodates various animals, the Adelaide Botanic Garden that holds the Australian native species, and a Mediterranean garden. They also have a beach in Glenelg, a popular escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
- Of course, religious buildings are also famous tourist destinations in Adelaide as we can find one at almost every corner of Adelaide. Most of these churches were built centuries ago and they boast a variety of world-class architecture.
- Museums are also worth a visit in Adelaide. The Ayers Historic House Museum is the finest example of Regency architecture in Australia, and where you can learn fascinating tidbits about the social history of the time when it was built. On the other hand, the South Australian Museum holds artifacts from the South Pacific Islands, Egyptian antiquities, and other aboriginal heritage collections.

- The cost construction of the Royal Adelaide Hospital cost 2.7 billion Australian dollars, making it the third most expensive building in the entire world.
- It was also the first city to give women the right to vote, criminalize sexual and racial discrimination, and recognize Indigenous land rights.
