The country of Algeria, officially known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, is located in the region of Maghreb of North Africa. The capital city of Algeria is Algiers, which is also the most populated city in the country. In terms of size, it is the tenth-largest country in the world and the largest country in the African Union and Arab world. Algeria is the eighth-most populated country in Africa.

ETYMOLOGY
- Algeria was derived from the country’s capital city, Algiers.
- Algiers was derived from the Arabic phrase “al-Jazā’ir”, which simply means “ The Islands”.
- “Al-Jazā’ir” is just a shortened derivative of the phrase “Jazā’ir Banī Mazghana”, which means “Islands of the Mazghanna Tribe”, a name assigned by the Arab Geographers in the middle ages, such as Muhammad al-Idrisi.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
- Before the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria was formed in 1962 after Algeria’s independence from France, Algeria was ruled by several empires and dynasties.
- The major eras that impacted the formation of Algeria were the Zirid dynasty (973), Zayyanid dynasty (1235), Al Jazâ’ir (1515), French Occupation (1830), and Independence from France (1962).
- 200,000 BC — Hominids occupied North Africa, particularly in the region of Ain Hanech.
- 43,000 BC — Neanderthals produced tools in the area that is now Algeria.
- Algeria was the site where the Middle Paleolithic Flake tool techniques were most developed.
- 30,000 BC — Aterian tools were produced in Algeria.
- 11,000 BC — Neolithic civilization developed in the Maghreb and Saharan regions.
- 600 BC — As part of the Carthaginian expansion, Phoenician settlements were established at Tipasa, Cherchell, Hippo Regius, and Rusicade, in ancient Algeria.
- 241-238 BC — Berber soldiers rebelled against the Carthage after their loss in the First Punic War.
- 146 BC — Carthage was destroyed.
- 2nd Century BC — Berber kingdoms emerged.
- 24 AD — North Africa was conquered by the Roman Empire.
- 429 AD — Vandals of Geiseric moved into North Africa.
- 435 AD — Vandals controlled the coasts of Numidia.
- 8th Century — Muslim Arabs of the Umayyad Caliphate conquered Algeria.
- 16th Century — Spain built outposts on the coasts of Algeria.
- Spain took control of several Algerian towns.
- 1516-1830 — The Ottoman empire ruled over Algeria.
- 1516 — Turkish privateers moved their quarters to Algiers.
- The first Ottoman ruler of Algeria was Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1518.
- July 5, 1830 — The French Colonial Empire conquered the city of Algiers.
- There were about 825,000 indigenous Algerians killed during the French conquest in Algeria.
