Key Facts & Information
BRIEF HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND
- The country of Bolivia today was once part of the ancient Inca Empire. During the Spanish colonial days, it was known for its mineral wealth like gold and silver.
- With the discovery of gold, slavery was imposed by the Spaniards to massively exploit its wealth. Such systems of slavery reduced the native population except those Indians who lived in the Andes. Aside from the rigidness of slavery, the spread of European diseases also decreased their population.
- As expected, the Bolivian gold began to dry up by the end of the 17th century.
- In 1825, the Spanish colony gained their independence and was named after Simon Bolivar, the famous Venezuelan liberator. Along with Bolivia, Bolívar also led Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia towards independence from Spain.
- Sucre city is the capital of Bolivia with about 621,383 inhabitants, but the working capital is located in the site of La Paz. Bolivia is now divided into 9 regions, including Beni, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, La Paz, Oruro, Pando, Potosi, Tarija, and Santa Cruz.
- Among its most famous animals are the llama and alpaca. Llamas are commonly used as carrier animals especially by those traversing the Andes.
FLAG
- The Bolivian flag is made up of three colors; red representing bravery of heroes who fought throughout their history; yellow for the natural mineral resources of the country; and green for nature’s fertility.
- The first flag of Bolivia was adopted on October 31, 1851 and has remained the same since then.
PEOPLE AND CULTURE
- Based on the latest United Nations statistics, Bolivia currently has a population of 11,348,307.
- Bolivians speak Spanish as their official language, though Aymara, Quechua, and Guarani are existing dialects.
- The natives of Bolivia include the Andino, tupi, Guarani, and Arawakan people.
- Being under Spanish rule for a long time, Bolivia’s dominant religion is Roman Catholic. Most Bolivian festivals are religious in nature. Large processions like the Morenada, Diablada, and Caporales, and traditional dances like Kallawaya, Tobas, Waca-waca, and Tinku are usually done during festivals.
- The most popular sport in Bolivia is soccer.
BOLIVIAN POLITICS
- On February 3, 1967, Bolivia turned into a representative democracy, with its government divided into executive, bicameral legislative, and judicial branch. The country is essentially a unitary system with nine departments, all administered by prefects appointed by the president every four years.
- In 2005, Evo Morales, a Bolivian Indian activist became the first indigenous president of the country.
- In 2013, President Evo Morales was allowed by the Constitutional Court to run for a third term considering his first term was predated by the amended constitution in 2009.
