INTRODUCTION

  • Brunei is a Southeast Asian country that sits in a location completely surrounded by the insular Malaysian state of Sarawak.
  • Brunei is an independent Islamic sultanate.
  • Brunei is bounded by the South China Sea to the north, and by the East Malaysian state of Sarawak on all other sides.
  • In 1984, Brunei achieved its independence after having been a British protectorate since 1888.
  • Brunei is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, formerly known as the British Commonwealth of Nations, and of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

GEOGRAPHY

  • Brunei’s location is along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
  • Brunei’s terrain is a flat coastal plain which rises to mountains in the east and has hilly lowlands in the west.
  • Brunei’s climate is tropical equatorial and humid subtropical.
  • There are two seasons, the dry season and wet or rainy season.

DIVISIONS

  • Districts are the principal administrative divisions of Brunei.
  • Brunei is divided into four (4) districts: (1) Brunei-Muara, (2) Belait, (3) Tutong, and (4) Temburong.
  • A district officer heads each district.
  • The capital of Brunei-Muara is Bandar Seri Begawan, which is also the capital of Brunei.
  • The capital of Belait is Kuala Belait.
  • The capital of Tutong is Tutong.
  • The capital of Temburong is Bangar.
  • The second-level administrative division of Brunei is a mukim, and is the primary subdivision of a district.
  • A mukim is headed by a penghulu, and is further divided into villages.
  • There are 17 mukims under the district of Brunei-Muara: Berakas ‘A’, Berakas ‘B’, Burong Pingai Ayer, Gadong ‘A’, Gadong ‘B’, Kianggeh, Kilanas, Kota Batu, Lumapas, Mentiri, Pangkalan Batu, Peramu, Saba, Sengkurong, Serasa, Sungai Kebun, and Tamoi.
  • There are 8 mukims under the district of Belait: Bukit Sawat, Kuala Balai, Kuala Belait, Labi, Liang, Melilas, Seria, and Sukang.
  • There are also 8 mukims under the district of Tutong: Keriam, Kiudang, Lamunin, Pekan Tutong, Rambai, Tanjong Maya, Telisai, and Ukong.
  • Lastly, there are 5 mukims under the district of Temburong: Amo, Bangar, Batu Apoi, Bokok, and Labu.
  • The Sengkurong mukim has the largest population out of all mukims.

ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURES

  • Crude oil and natural gas production is the main industry in Brunei, which is why Brunei is considered the fourth-largest producer of oil in Southeast Asia and the ninth-largest exporter of liquified natural gas in the world.
  • When it comes to agricultural products, Brunei heavily depends on imports from other countries.
  • Brunei also depends on imports when it comes to cars and electrical products.
  • The main entry point to the country is through Brunei International Airport.

CULTURE

  • The official language in Brunei is Standard Malay.
  • The most popular sport in Brunei is association football, commonly known as football or soccer.
  • The official religion of Brunei is Islam, specifically that of the Sunni denomination. Other faiths practiced are Buddhism and Christianity.
  • Brunei is particularly known for its metalwork. During the peak of the Brunei sultanate’s power, brass and silver artisans were treated as being of high value due to their craftsmanship.
  • These artisans produced gongs, cannons, and other works that were often embossed with designs of serpents and other animals.
  • Locally, gongs are of important value as musical instruments.
  • The royal nobat ensemble uses a set of vertically suspended gongs with double-reed instruments, called serunai, and single-headed and double-headed drums. The ensemble is used for important palace events such as coronations, marriages, deaths, and the reception of honored guests.
  • The nobat is also sometimes used to announce the times for Muslim prayer.
  • The gulintangan is the nonroyal ensemble, and is composed of a set of seven or eight small, horizontally suspended gongs alongside several larger, vertically suspended gongs, and one or two double-headed drums. This nonroyal ensemble is usually used for festivals in Malay and other communities.
  • The skyline of the country’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is dominated by the high golden dome of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque which was built in 1958.
  • This mosque features classic attributes of Muslim architecture and was built and furnished using fine materials from around the world.
  • Another mosque is the Jame’ Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque which was built in Kampong Kiarong and is considered as the largest mosque in the country.
