Colombia, officially known as the Republic of Colombia, is the second most diverse country in the world, distinguished for its natural resources, modern cityscapes, and diverse culture. The world’s leading source of emeralds, Colombia is more than salsa, coffee, and beautiful women.

HISTORY OF COLOMBIA
- Indigenous tribes inhabited Colombia in 12,500 B.C. and the two main civilizations that formed were the Tairona and the Muisca people, and they were both ruled by a chief.
- The Spanish were the first Europeans to arrive and they founded the first settlement of Santa Maria in 1525.
- In the decades that followed, several other Spanish conquistadors would establish various settlements.
- It was during this time that Europeans began to bring slaves over from Africa.
- In 1739, Great Britain declared war on Spain; the trading port city of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast was a major objective for Spain to capture.
- Spain was victorious in holding the area, and it was this event that solidified the Spanish presence and dominance in the area until the late 18th century.
- The Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.
GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
- Colombia is divided into six different regions: (1) Andean region, (2) Pacific region, (3) Caribbean region, (4) Amazon region, (5) Orinoco region, and (6) Insular region.
- Andean region. This is where the majority of Colombia’s population live. The climate varies greatly depending on altitude.
- Pacific region. Located on the west coast of Colombia, this region has a high humidity and has an area which receives an abundance of precipitation that supports the various rivers located within the region. The economy is based on various things, such as agriculture, mining, fishing, and more.
- Caribbean region. This region borders the Caribbean Sea and is home to many rivers. The historic port cities of Santa Maria and Cartagena are found in this region. Although the region is relatively humid, it also includes a mountain range and a desert.
- Amazon region. This is found in southern Colombia and is mostly covered in tropical rainforests or jungle, which is part of the Amazon Rainforest.
- Orinoco region. This region is sparsely populated. It is rich in oil and suitable for ranching. The ecosystems found are tropical savanna with gallery forests. These forests look like corridors along rivers that project onto deserts or savannas.
- Insular region. This region includes islands just off the coast of Colombia, as well as coastal islands off the mainland. The ecosystem is mostly tropical rainforest.
ECONOMY
- Major industries in Colombia include petroleum, natural gas, manufacturing, and mining materials such as coal, gold, copper, emerald, and more.
- Colombia has one of the largest shipbuilding industries in the world.
- The country also has the fastest growing information technology industry in the world.
- Colombia has seen a surge in the number of tourists it brings in annually and this number continues to grow each year.
- In recent years, there has been a push by the government to export more Colombian music, art, and pop culture, including more video games, TV shows, movies, fashion, and music. This movement is caused by the government’s attempt on diversifying the economy and changing the image of Colombia.
- Since Colombia is so geographically rich and diverse, eco-tourism is a major contributor to the tourism sector, as there is an abundance of jungles, coastline, volcanoes, and mountains for tourists to visit and explore.
- Colombia exports bananas, coffee, coal, and petroleum, and imports items such as industrial equipment, chemicals, and electricity.
COLOMBIAN CULTURE
- Colombia has influences from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle East; it has a vibrant music scene and a wide variety of art and architectural styles due to its various cultural influences.
- Popular sports in Colombia include soccer, baseball, and boxing.
- Colombian dishes and ingredients vary greatly by region. Popular dishes typically include assorted legumes, beef, goat, and seafood.
- Colombia is one of the world’s largest consumers of fruit juices; it is said that stands selling juice are found throughout Colombia.
