Estonia is a country in Northern Europe, officially known as The Republic of Estonia. It has a great deal of water surrounding it and consists of many islands as well as the mainland.

INTRODUCTION
- Estonia is a lowland country, bordered by the Baltic Sea, Latvia, and Russia.
- There are numerous lakes, rivers, and forests throughout this country.
- The rivers flow into the sea in the Gulf of Finland as well as in the largest lake in Estonia, Lake Peipus.
- Estonia’s capital city is Tallinn.
- The neighbor countries of Estonia are Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Latvia.
- Estonia is east from the Baltic Sea and northeast of the Baltic States.
- Estonia became a part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on March 29, 2004. Estonia joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.
HISTORY
- Ancient Estonians resided on the shores of the Baltic Sea for thousands of years. They are one of the longest-settled folks on the continent of Europe.
- They settled independently until the 1200s when they were conquered by many different empires including Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Russia.
- Estonia’s people who were dominated by other nations remained under the rule of other countries until after the first world war.
- In 1918 Estonia was given independence and in 1920 they signed a peace treaty with Russia.
- Sadly, when the second world war began Russian troops occupied Estonia, which turned the country into part of Russia.
- In 1941 the German army took over. Then in 1944, the Russians took Estonia back again where they sent tens of thousands of Estonians to be deported to Siberia.
- Eventually, after being oppressed for centuries, the Estonians and other Baltic countries joined together in a non-violent organization to bring about change.
- They assembled together and sang their patriotic songs in public and started ‘The Singing Revolution’ in 1988.
- This peaceful revolution directed them to their independence and helped them regain their freedom in 1991.
- They became a democracy and one of the ten states to join the EU, the European Union.
ECONOMY
- Estonia has farming, forestry, as well as fishing industries that make good use of the land and its resources.
- The main crops are potatoes, barley, and hay. They also have cattle and pig farms too.
- A large number of rivers, lakes, and surrounding seawater provide for fishing industries.
- The timber in the forests can be felled and used to make paper, pulp, plywood, and other timber products.
- These industries support many people working in Estonia.
- The most significant mineral in Estonia is oil shale. Oil shale is a type of rock that can produce petroleum products.
- Estonia also has reserves of peat, phosphorus, limestone, dolomite, marl, and clay.
- Public transport is free. There are 3 ports near Tallinn and 1 inland port at Narva. The state of Estonia runs the shipping company and the state airlines.
- The currency used in Estonia is the Kroon, but recently the country has started using the Euro as well.
CULTURE
- People in Estonia love singing and music. They have a song celebration that dates way to 1869 when they held the first festival. Currently, the festival held every five years, which is one of the largest choral events in the world.
- Most people speak Estonian or Russian. The people who live on the island of Muchu have their own dialect and a culture that is closer to Scandinavia.
- Estonians are not very religious. Most of them are atheists. The people who do go to church are frequently Christians or Lutheran and some from Eastern Orthodox communities.

- Estonians enjoy a non-Olympic sport named ‘wife carrying.’ They won the wife carrying championships for 11 consecutive years, between 1998 and 2008.
- Estonia is one of the cleanest places to breathe on earth with 50% of the country being forests and 22% being agricultural land.
- Estonia is defined as the most internet-focused country in Europe – you can still get the internet in the middle of the forests!
- Estonia has the greatest collection of folk songs in the world – 133,000 altogether. Estonians love singing.
