FLAG & MOTTO

  • The motto of Indonesia is “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” or in English, “Unity in Diversity.”
  • The Flag of Indonesia consists of two colors, the color red on top and the color white on the bottom. The two colors have a ratio of 2:3.
  • The flag was introduced in public on August 17, 1945.
  • The official name of the Indonesian flag is Sang Saka Merah-Putih or “lofty bicolor red and white.”)
  • It is said that the color white in the Indonesian flag stands for purity, while the color red stands for courage.

  • The capital and largest city of Indonesia is Jakarta, located in the northwest coast of Java.

ETYMOLOGY

  • The name Indonesia came from the Greek word Indos and the word nesos which means “Indian islands.”
  • The name Indonesia dates back to the 18th century.
  • The terms Indunesians and Malayunesians were proposed by English ethnologist George Windsor Earl to refer to the inhabitants of the “Indian or Malayan Archipelago.”
  • Richardson Logan, Earl’s student, used the term Indonesia.
  • Ki Hajar Dewantara was the first native to use the term Indonesia in 1914.

GEOGRAPHY

  • Indonesia is an archipelago, consisting of more than seventeen thousand islands.
  • The Indonesian archipelago notably includes the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, and New Guinea.
  • The total land area of Indonesia is 1,904,569 square kilometers or 735,358 square miles.
  • Indonesia is the world’s 14th largest country by land area.
  • Java Island, one of Indonesia’s islands, is known to be the world’s most-populous island. Half of the Indonesian population resides on Java.
  • Indonesia shares land borders with Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Timor.
  • Indonesia shares maritime borders with Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Palau, and Australia.

HISTORY

  • The first inhabitants of Indonesia resided in the archipelago two million to 500,000 years ago; they are the Homo Erectus or the Java Man.
  • Homo sapiens resided in Indonesia around 46,000 years ago.
  • Austronesian people arrived in Indonesia around 4,000 years ago.
  • The Srivijaya naval kingdom ruled the region in the 7th century and brought Hindu and Buddhist influences.
  • In the 8th and 10th century Sailendra and Mataram dynasties ruled and fell in Java.
  • The Majapahit Kingdom was founded in eastern Java in the later part of the 13th century, with Gajah Mada as its ruler. This was deemed as the Golden Age of Indonesian History.
  • Islam in Indonesia originated from northern Sumatra in the 13th century.
  • Java and Sumatra adopted Islam by the end of the 16th century.
  • The Dutch East India Company ruled over Indonesia from March 20, 1602.
  • The Dutch East Indies began their reign on January 1, 1800.

  • Indonesia proclaimed independence on August 17, 1945.
  • The Dutch recognized Indonesia’s independence on December 27, 1949.

  • Liang Bua — a cave in the Lesser Sunda Islands where the remnants of Homo floresiensis, an extinct species of humans were found.
  • Raja Ampat Rock Paintings — located in West Papua, these rock paintings date back to 3,000-5,000 years ago.
  • Padang Hill — located in West Java, a hill that has the largest concentration of megalithic stones in Southeast Asia.
