- Pristina is the second-largest Albanian-speaking city in Europe, after Tirana in Albania.
- Pristina is located in the northeastern region of Kosovo, close to the Gollak mountains.

GEOGRAPHY
- Kosovo is a landlocked country or a country surrounded by land, located in the center of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe.
- Kosovo has a total area of 10,887 square kilometers or 4,203 square miles.
- Kosovo is bordered by Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the west.
ETYMOLOGY
- The region of Kosovo is simply referred to as Kosovo in English and Kosova or Kosovë in Albanian.
- In Serbia, Kosovo is used to refer to the eastern part where the historical Kosovo Field is located, while the western part of the region is referred to as Metohija.
- Kosovo in Serbian means ‘blackbird’, so the term Kosovo Polje means ‘Blackbird Field’, a historic site where the Battle of Kosovo Field occured in 1389.
- The name Kosovo Province was applied in 1864.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
- The Balkans first settled in the Kosovan region in the 7th century.
- Kosovo became the center of the Serbian Empire in the medieval period.
- Serbia was defeated in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.
As a result, Kosovo was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for five centuries. - Albanians and Turks moved to Kosovo during the Ottoman Rule.
- Albanians gradually outnumbered the Serbs and replaced the majority of the populace by the end of the 19th century.
- During the First Balkan War of 1912, Kosovo regained control of the region.
- Kosovo became an autonomous province of Serbia in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after the Second World War.
- In the 1980s, Albanian nationalists called for Kosovo’s independence.
- In 1989, Serbia revoked Kosovo’s autonomous status.
- In 1991, Albanian leaders of Kosovo organized a referendum on the declaration of Kosovo’s independence.
- Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008, however other parts of the world do not recognize Kosovo’s independence.
- Kosovo received 116 diplomatic recognitions as an independent state as of September 4, 2020, but 15 withdrew.
- Kosovo was recognized as an independent state by:
- 98 out of 193 United Nations (UN) member states.
- 22 out of 27 European Union (EU) member states.
- 26 out of 30 NATO member states.
- 33 out of 57 Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.
- Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, making it a disputed territory.
- Serbia claims it as the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.

- Albanian music is distinguished by the use of the Çifteli, a plucked string instrument with only two strings.
