INTRODUCTION
- Mozambique is officially known as the Republic of Mozambique.
- Mozambique is bordered to the north by Tanzania, to the east by the Indian Ocean, to the west by Zimbabwe, to the northwest by Malawi and Zambia, and to the southwest by Eswatini and South Africa.
- Maputo is the capital city of Mozambique, and it is also the largest city in the country.
- Mozambique plays an important role in the maritime economy of the Indian Ocean, as it offers some of Africa’s best natural harbors.
- The country got its name – Moçambique – after the Island of Mozambique, and the name was given to the country by the Portuguese.
- Mozambique was a former colony of Portugal, and it received its independence in 1975.
GEOGRAPHY
- Mozambique is recognized as the 36th-largest country in the world, with its size being comparable to that of Turkey.
- Mozambique is split into two topographical regions that are divided by the Zambezi River.
- A narrow coastal strip giving way to inland hills and low plateaus can be seen on the northern part of the Zambezi River.
- On the western part of the Zambezi River, rugged highlands can be found, including the Niassa highlands, Namuli or Shire highlands, Angonia highlands, Tete highlands, and the Makonde plateau, which is covered with the Miombo highlands.
- On the southern part of the Zambezi River is where the broader lowlands can be found, which include the Mashonaland plateau and the Lebombo mountains.
- The Zambezi River is the largest and most important river of Mozambique, but there are several other rivers that can be found in Mozambique.
- Mozambique also houses four (4) notable lakes: (1) Lake Niassa or Malawi, (2) Lake Chiuta, (3) Lake Cahora Bassa, and (4) Lake Shirwa.
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS
- Mozambique is separated into ten (10) provinces and one (1) capital city with provincial status.
- The ten (10) provinces include: (1) Niassa, (2) Cabo Delgado, (3) Nampula, (4) Tete, (5) Zambezia, (6) Manica, (7) Sofala, (8) Gaza, (9) Inhambane, and (10) Maputo.
- The provinces are further divided into 129 districts.
- The districts are further divided into 405 administrative posts and then into localities.
- The capital of Cabo Delgado is Pemba, Xai-xai is the capital of Gaza, Inhambane is the capital of Inhambane, Chimoio is the capital of Manica, Matola is the capital of Maputo, Nampula is the capital of Nampula, Lichinga is the capital of Niassa, Beira is the capital of Sofala, Tete is the capital of Tete, and Quelimane is the capital of Zambezia.
- Maputo is different from Maputo City, as Maputo City is the capital city of Mozambique.
- There are 16 districts in Cabo Delgado, 11 in Gaza, 12 in Inhambane, 9 in Manica, 7 in Maputo, 18 in Nampula, 15 in Niassa, 12 in Sofala, 12 in Tete, and 16 in Zambezia.
- There are 405 postos, or administrative posts, in Mozambique. Postos are the main subdivisions of districts.
CLIMATE
- Mozambique’s climate is tropical with a wet season and a dry season.
- Rainfall is usually heavy along the coast but decreases in the northern part and in the southern part.
BIODIVERSITY
- There are about 6,000 species of plants that have been recorded in Mozambique, and about 200 of them are considered to be threatened species.
- In the southern part of Mozambique exists the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Hotspot, which is a biodiversity hotspot with high levels of plant endemism.
- There are about 300 species of mammals that have been recorded in Mozambique, of which about 20 species are considered to be threatened.
- Some mammals that can be found in Mozambique include the common warthog, the hippopotamus, the common eland, the greater kudu, the nyala, the waterbuck, and the blue wildebeest.
- There are about 50 species of rodents that can be found in Mozambique, around 10 species of shrew, and about 60 species of bat.
- There are about 700 species of birds that have been recorded in Mozambique, including the lesser jacana, the crab-plover, the mangrove kingfisher, the African pitta, the pale batis, and the locust finch.
- There are also numerous species of snakes that can be found in Mozambique, including some venomous species like the puff adder.
- Non-venomous species that can be found in Mozambique include the green tree python, the mole snake, and the egg-eating snake.
- In Mozambique, the savannah monitor is considered to be the largest lizard.
- Mozambique has seven (7) national parks, which include: (1) Banhine National Park, (2) Bazaruto National Park, (3) Gorongosa National Park, (4) Limpopo National Park, (5) Magoe National Park, (6) Quirimbas National Park, and (7) Zinave National Park.
- There are six (6) national reserves in Mozambique, which include: (1) Chimanimani National Reserve, (2) Gilé National Reserve, (3) Maputo Special Reserve, (4) Marromeu Buffalo Reserve, (5) Niassa National Reserve, and (6) Pomene National Reserve.
