INTRODUCTION
- Palawan is officially known as the Province of Palawan.
- Palawan is an archipelagic province of the Philippines that can be found in the Southwestern Tagalog Region or MIMAROPA.
- MIMAROPA is an administrative region in the Philippines, and is one of the two regions in the country that have no land border with another region.
- MIMAROPA is an acronym composed of its constituent provinces: Mindoro (MI), Marinduque (MA), Romblon (RO), and Palawan (PA).
- Palawan is a long and narrow group of islands that trends from northeast to southwest between the South China Sea and the Sulu seas.
- The islands of Palawan stretch in the northeast and in the southwest between Mindoro and Borneo.
- The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island.
GEOGRAPHY
- The province is composed of several islands.
- There are roughly 1,780 islands and islets composing the province.
- The Calamianes Group of Islands that is located in the northeast consists of Busuanga, Coron, Culion, and Linapacan islands.
- The Balabac Island that is located in the southern part is separated from Borneo by the Balabac Strait.
- Palawan is subdivided into 23 municipalities and 433 barangays, and its capital city, the Puerto Princesa City.
- As an archipelagic province, Palawan has 13 mainland municipalities and island towns.
- The 13 mainland municipalities include Aborland, Bataraza, Brooke’s Point, Dumaran, El Nido, Narra, Puerto Princesa, Quezon, Rizal, Roxas, San Vicente, Sofronio Española, and Taytay.
- The island municipalities or towns include Agutaya, Araceli, Balabac, Busuanga, Cagayancillo, Coron, Culion, Cuyo, Kalayaan, Linapacan, and Magsaysay.
PALAWAN ISLAND
- Palawan Island is the largest island of the Palawan province, and is the fifth largest island of the country.
- The crust of the northeastern part of Palawan Island was derived from the southeast edge of the continental crust of China, which is part of the Eurasian Plate. This is the exposed portion of a microcontinent that drifted southward with the opening of the South China Sea.
- The Palawan Trough is the part where there are deeper waters and are adjacent to the north coast of Palawan in the South China Sea.
- Palawan Island, together with the Calamian Islands, are considered to be an extension of the Sunda Plate.
BIODIVERSITY
- Palawan is bio-geographically part of Sundaland, with a biodiversity related to Borneo.
- Many endemic species can be found in Palawan including the Palawan peacock-pheasant, Philippine mouse-deer, Philippine pangolin, Palawan bearded pig, and Palawan birdwing.
- There are also over 200 kinds of birds, over 600 species of butterflies, and around 1,500 species of plants.
- On the white sand beaches of Palawan can be found some endangered sea turtles.
ECONOMY
- The economy of Palawan is heavily dependent on agriculture.
- The three (3) major crops of Palawan are: (1) palay or rice grain, (2) corn, and (3) coconut.
- Mineral resources that can be found in Palawan include nickel, copper, manganese, and chromite.
- Other major industries in Palawan include logging and tourism.
TOURISM
- There are several tourist attractions that can be found in Palawan.
- The Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is a game reserve and wildlife sanctuary of exotic African animals and other endangered endemic animals of Palawan, which can be found on Calauit Island in Busuanga.
- The El Nido Marine Reserve Park is a tourist attraction but also helped in the protection of Palawan’s giant clams and in the re-introduction of the endangered Philippine cockatoos.
- There are two (2) places in Palawan that have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. These are the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park that was recognized in 1993, and the Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park that was recognized in 1999.
DEMOGRAPHICS
- The population in Palawan is still dominated by native-born Palaweños (the identifier being used to people living in Palawan).
- However, there are also other cultural minority groups such as the Tagbanwa, Palawano, Batak, and Molbog.
- The predominant religion in Palawan is Roman Catholicism. In fact, the Palawan Island is divided into two (2) Apostolic Vicariates: the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa in Southern Palawan and the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay in Northern Palawan.
- There is also a small portion who identify themselves as Muslims, these being mostly from the Molbog group who are mostly found in Balabac and in Bataraza.
- There are also some ethnic minorities who identified themselves as animists who are said to have continued to preserve their ancient traditions.
- In terms of language, there are 52 languages and dialects being used in the province. Tagalog, however, is the dominant language spoken by around 50% of the population.
- Some languages are also native in Palawan including Cuyonon, Palawano, and Kinaray-a.
