Qatar, officially known as the State of Qatar, is a country situated in the western region of the Asian continent. The country occupies the Qatar Peninsula, residing on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

  • Qatar is officially the State of Qatar.
  • The flag of Qatar is maroon with a serrated band of white, particularly with nine white points, on the side of the hoist.
  • The flag’s ratio is 11:28.
  • The flag was adopted on September 3, 1971 when the country declared independence from Britain.
  • The flag’s official name is Al-Adaam.
  • The largest and capital city of Qatar is Doha.
  • Doha is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, at the eastern region of Qatar.
  • As of 2015, Doha had a population of 956,460.
  • 80% of the population of Qatar lives in Doha.
  • The city proper of Doha has an area of 132 square kilometers or 51 square miles.
  • Qatar is governed by a unitary absolute monarchy.
  • Qatar’s current emir, or monarch, is Tamim bin Hamad.

GEOGRAPHY

  • The only land border of Qatar is Saudi Arabia to the south.
  • The rest of Qatar is surrounded by the Persian Gulf.
  • The Gulf of Bahrain separates Bahrain from Qatar.
  • Most of Qatar features a low, barren plain, covered with sand.
  • Qatar has a total area of 11,581 square kilometers or 4,471 square miles.
  • Qurayn Abu al Bawl is the highest point in Qatar, at 103 meters or 338 feet high.

  • The demonym referring to the citizens of Qatar is Qatari.
  • According to a 2020 estimate, the Qatari populace grew to 2,795,484.

ETYMOLOGY

  • Catharrei was the term that Pliny the Elder, a Roman writer, used to refer to the inhabitants of the Qatari peninsula around the mid-first century AD.
  • According to a map produced by Ptolemy, a century after Pliny the Elder, the depiction of the peninsula was named Catara.
  • To the east of the peninsula, a town named Cadara was located.
  • The terms Catara to refer to the peninsula, and Catarei, its inhabitants, were used until the 18th century.
  • The term Katara followed as the most common spelling to refer to the peninsula.
  • “Katr,” “Kattar,” and “Guttur” were several variations of the name, until the modern derivative Qatar was adopted as the country’s name.

HISTORY

  • Little is known about the history of Qatar before the 18th century.
  • The earliest known settlers of Qatar were the Bedouin nomads who lived in small fishing villages.
  • Families from Kuwait, including the Al Khalifah, migrated to Qatar in 1766.
  • A conquest of Bahrain led by Al Khalifah happened in 1783, and so they remained under rule of Bahrain until the 20th century.
  • Transitory sheiks ruled Qatar after Al Khalifa left.
  • The British gained interest towards Qatar in 1867 via a dispute with Al Khalifa, who still held claim to Al-Zubarah, his hometown in Qatar.
  • Ottoman forces occupied Qatar in 1871 and left in 1913.
  • In 1916, Qatar and Britain signed a treaty that gave Britain control over foreign policy in Qatar, in exchange for protection.
  • Qatar signed an agreement with the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1935.
  • The oil industry recovered to a commercial scale in 1948.
  • Britain announced withdrawal in 1968.
  • Qatar declared independence on September 3, 1971. In the same month, Qatar joined the Arab League and the United Nations.
  • Qatar joined to establish the Gulf Cooperation Council in 1981.

CULTURE

  • The culture of Qatar, of course, is similar to the neighboring countries located in Eastern Arabia.
  • The culture of Qatar is also influenced by the Islamic faith.
  • The Al Thani family, the ruling family of Qatar, is known to be avid collectors of contemporary and Islamic art.
  • The Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar opened in 2008.
  • Museums in Qatar are governed by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) that also sponsors artistic events abroad.
  • Qatar is known as the world’s biggest buyer in the art market.
  • Recently, the National Museum of Qatar opened on March 28, 2019.
  • Bedouin poetry is known as the foundation of Qatari song and dance.
  • Ardah, a traditional Qatari dance, is a stylised martial dance.
  • Qatari percussive instruments are used to accompany such dance, such as the al-ras, a large drum.
  • Qatari cuisine is comprised of traditional Arab cuisine.
  • The national dish in Qatar is the machbūs, a meal made of rice, meat, and vegetables.
  • Staple food items in Qatar include seafood and dates.
  • The most popular sport in Qatar is association football.

LANDMARKS

  • Al Jassasiya petroglyphs — found in Madinat ash Shamal is a group of 900 unusual petroglyphs. The petroglyphs depict geometrical patterns, animals, and boats. Some unusual petroglyphs are believed to be used for games.
  • Al Zubarah — an abandoned settlement in Madinat ash Shamal. It was the rich trade city of the 18th century where Al Khalifa settled.
  • Al Koot Fort — A fortress located in Doha that was built in 1927. The fort is now a museum.
  • Zubarah Fort — a well preserved fortress built in 1938, located in Madinat ash Shamal.
  • Aspire Tower — a 300 meter tall skyscraper in Doha. The tower serves as a hotel and was built in an unusual hyperboloid shape.
