INTRODUCTION
- South Sudan is officially known as the Republic of South Sudan.
- South Sudan is bordered by Sudan to the north, by Ethiopia to the east, by Central African Republic to the west, by Uganda to the south, by Kenya to the southeast, and by the Democratic Republic of Congo to the southwest.
- Under the dynasty of Muhammad Ali, South Sudan was occupied by Egypt and it was governed as an Anglo-Egyption condominium until the Sudanese independence in 1956.
- In 1972, the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was formed after the First Sudanese Civil War, and this region lasted until 1983.
- On July 9, 2011, South Sudan gained independence from the Republic of the Sudan and was recognized as an independent state.
STATES
- South Sudan is divided into ten (10) states, two (2) administrative areas, and one (1) area with a special administrative status.
- The divisions are grouped into three former historical provinces of Sudan.
- The three (3) former historical provinces of Sudan include: (1) Bahr el Ghazal, (2) Equatoria, and the (3) Great Upper Nile.
- The ten (1) states of Sudan are: (1) Northern Bahr el Ghazal, (2) Western Bahr el Ghazal, (3) Lakes, (4) Warrap, (5) Western Equatoria, (6) Central Equatoria, (7) Eastern Equatoria, (8) Jonglei, (9) Unity, and (10) Upper Nile.
- The two (2) administrative areas are: (1) Pibor Administrative Area, and (2) Ruweng Administrative Area.
- The Abyei Special Administrative Area is the area with the special administrative status.
GEOGRAPHY
- South Sudan has three (3) notable disputed areas: (1) Abyei Area, (2) Kafia Kingi, and (3) Ilemi Triangle.
- The Abyei Area is a small region of South Sudan that borders Sudan.
- Kafia Kingi is located on the westernmost part of South Sudan wherein most of it is within Radom National Park, a Sudanese biosphere reserve.
- The Ilemi Triangle is a small region in the far southeast of South Sudan that borders Kenya and Ethiopia.
- South Sudan is mostly covered in tropical forest, swamps, and grasslands.
BIODIVERSITY
- Bandingilo National Park of South Sudan hosts the second-largest wildlife migration in the world.
- The Boma National Park and the Southern National Park of South Sudan also provides habitat for large populations of hartebeest, kob, topi, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, and lions.
- The forests of South Sudan also provide habitat for bongo, giant forest hogs, red river hogs, chimpanzees, and monkeys.
CULTURE AND RELIGION
- The culture of South Sudan is heavily influenced by the culture of its neighboring countries.
- The languages commonly spoken in South Sudan are Juda Arabic and English, although Swahili is also being used especially to improve the relation of the country to its East African neighbors.
- English is the official language of South Sudan.
- Wrestling and mock battles are two of the popular sports in South Sudan.
- Football is also becoming popular in South Sudan.
- The major ethnic groups that can be found in South Sudan are the Dinka, the Nuer, the Bari, and the Azande.
- Traditional indigenous religions, Christianity, and Islam are the common religions followed by the people in South Sudan.
ECONOMY
- Exportation of timber to the international market is one of the industries in South Sudan.
- South Sudan also houses several natural resources such as petroleum, iron ore, copper, chromium ore, zinc, tungsten, mica, silver, gold, diamonds, hardwoods, limestone, and hydropower.
- The economy of South Sudan is heavily dependent on agriculture.
- South Sudan is considered to be the home to the third-largest oil reserve in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- South Sudan’s main crop is sorghum, a genus of flowering plants which includes about 25 species wherein some of these species are grown as cereals for human consumption.
- Other South Sudan crops include corn, millet, rice, cassava, peanuts, sweet potatoes, okra, and coffee.
- South Sudan forests yield hardwood timber including mahogany and sant, which is a type of acacia.
- The main source of fish in South Sudan is from the Nile river, specifically Nile perch.
- Prior to South Sudan’s independence, a dual banking system was in place in the region which recognized the Bank of Southern Sudan as the regional bank and the Central Bank of Sudan as the national bank.
- South Sudan’s main export is crude petroleum.
- Other exports of South Sudan include gum arabic.
- On the other hand, South Sudan imports most of its resources due to the food insecurity and the limited manufacturing sector of the country.
- Some of the imports of South Sudan include food, motor vehicles, machinery, and other manufactured goods.
