  • Phonics derives from the Greek word “phono”, which means sound or voice. Therefore, phonics is teaching students about the relationship between the sound of a letter (also known as a phoneme), and the letter or groups of letters of a written language that represent it (these are called graphemes).

  • Once these groups are established, syllables or groups of groups can be taught to blend, such as ch + op = chop.
