In the early days of computing, storing and accessing data took a lot of money and effort to accomplish. Data storage devices were huge, bulky, and fragile; it was easy for data to get lost or corrupted. Computing has progressed so much since then. Users can now reap the benefits of the cloud, making life so much easier.
See the fact file below for more information on the cloud computing or alternatively, you can download our 25-page Cloud Computing worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
Defining Cloud Computing
- โCloud is a model of computing where servers, networks, storage, development tools, and even applications (apps) are enabled through the internet.โ – Accenture
- The cloud is a virtual space where connected users can access different computing services at any given time and place.
- Software and applications that are not located or stored in the userโs personal devices and need the internet to operate are considered as cloud services.
- Streaming services like Netflix and Spotify are popular cloud services nowadays. Users enjoy a huge catalog of shows and songs without the burden of downloading and storing the media in their personal devices.
- Most users find web-based email and messaging services essential to daily life. These cloud services like Gmail and Messenger make communication faster and easier for all.
- Users can store important files, pictures and videos in the cloud. Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud help users do as such and also allow them to instantly share these files with authorized people.
- Productivity applications are also available in the cloud. Google came up with Google Workspace so users can access different productivity applications in one place. It includes several tools like a word processor, presentation builder, spreadsheets, survey builder, and more. The workspace also encourages users to collaborate with others. Users can instantly share their work with other individuals or their teams. They can allow these people to edit and add comments.
- Web-based design and editing platforms like Canva and Fotor are also part of the cloud. Users can instantly edit photos and create graphic designs online. There is no need for them to buy and download expensive creative apps or software to accomplish these things.
- Social networking services like Facebook and Instagram allow users to share thoughts, pictures, and videos on their online profile and help them stay connected with friends and family.
5 Major Attributes of Cloud Computing
- Internet Access. Users can only acquire cloud services by connecting to the internet, so internet access is an essential part of cloud computing.
- Measured Service. In this context, users only pay for the service or resource they acquire in the cloud. This idea is somehow similar to how phone companies monitor usersโ activity (e.g., number of calls) and bills them accordingly. This type of model is called pay-per-use.
- On-Demand Self-Service. Users access services or resources they need on their own at any given time and place. For example, connected users can access their email using any web browser. They can easily send emails using their account in the Gmail website.
- Shared Resource Pooling. Cloud service providers pool resources that several clients can tap into, even if they have different sets of needs.
- Rapid Elasticity. The cloud is expected to be resilient. It should efficiently serve users, quickly adapt to changes, and immediately recover from any disruption or damage.
3 Major Types of Cloud Computing
- Public Cloud. In this model, any connected user can use the resources shared by the cloud service provider. These users are free from the burden of owning and maintaining the required hardware. The Google Workspace is a great example of this model.
- Private Cloud. This type of cloud model exclusively serves one business or organization and uses a private internal network. Businesses or organizations that use private cloud solutions need more control in terms of security. One example is a private hospital that needs to secure their patientsโ identities and medical records.
- Hybrid Cloud. This cloud type is a combination of public and private cloud. Some businesses or organizations may need to keep highly sensitive data in their private cloud and also have resources that they want to share with public consumers.
Benefits of Cloud Computing
- People have witnessed their devices become smaller in size as tech companies continue to innovate over the years.
- As data storage has evolved over time, users have now come to enjoy the benefits that the cloud has to offer.
- Users do not need to buy bulky and expensive hardware to store files, media, and applications and worry about installation and maintenance.
- Users will not be limited to a small number of resources. With the cloud, they only need internet access to choose from an unlimited number of tools and applications.
- Businesses and organizations can also reduce their costs and seek help from a cloud service provider to manage and secure their data.
