Key Facts & Information
Definition and Importance of Graphic Design
- The idiom “a picture paints a thousand words” really fits the purpose of graphic design. Visual design conveys the artist’s message faster and more effectively than written words.
- This art enhances how a person communicates with others. When you create a visual design as an individual, you are not only limited to communicating with words, but also with images that are beautiful and pleasing.
- Most businesses use graphic design to promote their products and services both online and offline.
- Great visuals that look pleasing and professional help businesses establish a positive image, and thus help create brand awareness and trust.
- The visuals that a business uses set them apart from their competition. This helps create their identity and makes their brand recognizable.
Elements and Principles of Design
- These elements that will be discussed are what makes up any visual design.
- We have 7 design elements: line, shape, color, typography, texture, size, and space.
- Line is the most basic design element. It connects 2 or more points. It can be straight, curved, jagged and more. When illustrating, its use is almost limitless.
- Shape is any two-dimensional area defined by lines or boundaries. This element has 2 categories: geometric and organic. Geometric shapes are the regular ones like circle, square, triangle, etc. Organic shapes have a natural look and are more free form.
- Color adds life to any visual design. It evokes emotions and attracts attention. There are 3 main characteristics of color: hue (shade), value (lightness and darkness), and saturation (intensity).
- Color harmony is important in any design project. It helps designers choose what colors work well together. They often pick a hero color in the color wheel and see if they want to pair it with complementary, analogous, or triadic colors.
- Typography is the look and feel of the text. The font style, size, and color that the artist uses depends on their message. Function is still very important when it comes to typography. If the audience finds it hard to read the text, it defeats its purpose.
- Texture is used to draw attention to the visual design. It refers to the feeling the audience gets when they visually ‘touch’ the art. It adds another level to the experience.
- Size simply refers to how small or large an element is. The size of a design element speaks of its importance in the overall work. It can also help attract and organize.
- Space refers to the untouched areas of the design or the areas with no design elements. It helps artists draw the audience’s attention to more important elements in their work.
- The principles of design serve as a guide for artists when it comes to placing the different design elements on a page. It helps them do this in the best way possible.
- The principles of design include balance, alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast.
- Balance is what helps a visual design feel stable. It is the visual weight of design elements. A composition can be asymmetrically or symmetrically balanced, depending on the artist’s tone and message.
- Alignment and proximity help artists show the relationship of the different elements on a page. They can make a design look more organized and avoid visual clutter.
- Repetition of elements in a design makes the audience feel a sense of consistency.
- Contrast helps artists emphasize certain elements in a design that they want the audience to focus on.
