Key Facts & Information
DEFINITION AND HISTORY
- The dictionary defines technology as the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
- Its history includes the history of invention, development, and innovation, as well as the history of engineering and applied science.
- The term came from the Greek word techne, which means art and craft.
- It is said that technology began when man learned to use tools, which was achieved by the time of the Neanderthals around 70,000 BCE.
- Soon humans living in small nomadic communities developed better technology to compliment on their survival in gathering food, hunting, fishing, and avoiding predators.
- Thousands of years later, people invented cities and identified individual jobs, such as craftsmen and scientists.
- Metallurgy using copper and bronze was developed mostly for coinage. Alloying was soon discovered, and more metallic mixtures were produced for different purposes.
- Other technologies developed by our ancestors are irrigation, the manufacturing industry (pottery, cosmetics, culinary, etc.), buildings (ziggurat, pyramids, etc.), and the exchange of knowledge with other communities.
- The entry of the Greco-Roman era introduced the mastery of using iron and simple machines, such as the screw, the pulley, and the lever.
- Pumps, wind and hydraulic organs, compressed-air engines, and screw-cutting machines were introduced by Alexandrian engineers.
- The Romans then developed the treadmill for powering cranes and other heavy-lifting operations, while agriculture used an iron (or iron-tipped) plowshare.
- At this time, warfare became more advanced, especially among Romans, who developed more sophisticated weapons and better discipline.
- The Greeks were more tilted toward medicine, arts, and building construction.
- By the beginning of the Middle Ages, innovations included hydraulic engineering, trade and industry, windmill technology, the clothing industry, and mining.
- Architecture reached its peak during this period, as evidenced by the beautiful Romanesque and Gothic architecture we see today.
- Land transport became accessible by building better roads, while sea navigation became better through the invention of the compass, rudders, and navigational charts.
- Western technology also flourished around the 1500s with the production of the telescope, the steam engine, the textile industry, crop rotation, and military fortifications.
- The Industrial Revolution featured the advance of power technology. Electricity became a staple need for communities. The petroleum or oil industry also took off.
- Medicinal and pharmaceutical materials grew in importance as medical knowledge increased, and drugs began to play a constructive part in the field of medicine.
- One major development in transportation was the introduction of better locomotives, such as the steam locomotive and metal rails, steamboats, and ships.
- Printing and photography were also born together with telegraphs and telephones.
20th CENTURY AND BEYOND
- The airplane, the rocket, interplanetary probes, electronics, atomic power, antibiotics, insecticides, and a host of new materials have all been invented and developed since the beginning of the 1900s.
- The two World Wars were the most important instruments of technological development, as well as political change, in the 20th century.
- With the steady pace of modernization, the biggest leap man achieved later in the 20th century was the space age technology. We were finally able to explore outside our planet.
- Another important achievement is growing global connection through the invention of the computer and the internet.
- Early electronic computers, developed around the 1940s, were the size of a large room and consumed huge amounts of electricity. They were vastly different than the modern computers we use today, especially when compared to our small and portable laptop computers.
- Although we normally think of computers as the ones we use in our everyday lives to surf the web, write documents, etc., small computers are also embedded into other things, such as mobile phones, toys, microwaves, and MP3 players.
- The first coin-operated video games were introduced in the 1970s, with titles such as ‘Computer Space’ and ‘Pong’ gaining popularity. Video game genres are wide and varied.
- Although the World Wide Web is often referred to as the internet, the two are not the same thing. The internet is a huge network of networks that links computers together all over the world using a range of wires and wireless technologies. The World Wide Web is the collection of linked pages that are accessed using the internet and a web browser.
- English physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee is regarded as having invented the World Wide Web in 1989. Since then, he has continued the development of web standards and other web-related projects.
- Modern cell phones are capable of much more than just sending and receiving phone calls. It also allows users to send and receive text messages, emails, photos, and videos, as well as access the internet, play games, listen to music, use GPS (Global Positioning Systems), and more.
