Social-Emotional Learning
- Social-emotional learning is the process of people acquiring the right skills and attitude to understand their emotions, show empathy for others, build and maintain lasting relationships with others, and be responsible for their decisions.
- It helps not only the students to be successful academically but also in succeeding in their careers and life.
- People were not naturally born with this skill.
- Developing it at an early age becomes an advantage as a person progresses in life.
Social-Emotional Learning Theory
- Social-emotional learning is not a new concept and dates back to the Ancient Greeks.
- In the book of Plato entitled βThe Republic,β he mentioned that there must be a balance when learning physical education, art, math, science, character, and moral judgment.
- He mentioned, βBy maintaining a sound system of education and upbringing, you produce citizens of good character.β
- Child psychiatrist James Comer started a program in late 1960, which he called the Comer School Development Program.
- In a 1988 Scientific American article, James Comer mentioned: “The contrast between a child’s experiences at home and those in school deeply affects the child’s psychosocial development and that this, in turn, shapes academic achievement.”
- The program focused on two schools in New Haven, Connecticut.
- Among the schools in the city, these chosen schools had the worst attendance and lowest academic achievement rating.
- By implementing James Comerβs program, the schools exceeded the national average, and behavioral problems lessened.
- The resolutions to the academic and social programs and school procedures truly improved both schools.
- New Haven became the SEL research lab with professors Roger P. Weissberg and Timothy Shriver working together as researchers for the program between 1987 and 1992.
- In the same period, the W.T. Grant Foundation experts established a curriculum for social and emotional learning and suggested that students learn this in schools.
- They drew up a list of emotional skills and their descriptions and made that a guide for emotional competence.
- Social-emotional learning became more acknowledged, and in 1944, an organization was formed under the name CASEL (Collaborative to Advance Social and Emotional-Learning).
- The Fetzer Institute hosted the first meeting of the CASEL attended by pioneers in the field.
- They aim to implement an effective school program for SEL.
- After a few years, some of the CASEL partners co-authored βPromoting Social and Emotional Learning: Guidelines for Educators.β
- In 1995, social-emotional learning became popularized by a science reporter named Daniel Goleman.
- A book by Daniel and Fetzer was published and translated into different languages: βEmotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.β
- Until today, the concept of SEL is still continuously improving to provide a better approach to teaching students the importance of incorporating SEL into oneβs life.
Five Competencies of Social-Emotional Learning
- Relationship Skills
- These are the ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships with other people.
- When a person is aware of what the other party needs, it can be an important variant in building a positive relationship with them.
- Communication and listening are both essential to this skill.
- Social Awareness
- It is the ability to understand and empathize with the feelings of other people regardless of their background and culture.
- Decision-Making
- It is the ability to make constructive and positive decisions that can affect a personβs life.
- Decisions may be affected by factors such as social, emotional, physical, and intellectual aspects.
- Self-Awareness
- It is the ability to identify and understand a personβs own emotions and thoughts that can affect the decisions made by that person.
- It is essential to recognize the personβs strengths and abilities to encourage them to take positive and significant actions in life.
- Self-Management
- It is the ability to control emotions and behaviors.
- It is useful when setting goals, stress management, and organization.
Social-Emotional Learning in Classrooms
There are several different ways to teach the social-emotional learning a student needs. Some of these include:
- Be observant and attentive to the needs of the students.
- Guide them and establish trust by listening and ensuring that you will be there whenever the student needs you.
- Maintain open communication with the students.
- Teachers can incorporate SEL with formal subjects.
- Assign group projects which will help them build a relationship with others, build their confidence, and learn to manage their priorities.
- Establish a healthier environment by implementing policies and not tolerating bully behaviors.
- Teach them the importance of managing emotions.
- Remind them that their feelings may impact the actions that they do.
- Help them achieve their goals by teaching them the importance of persistence and determination.
- Monitor their progress and praise them even for their little achievements.
- You can use tools and decorations such as banners or posters of inspirational messages and post them on the walls to help the students be motivated and reminded of their goals.
