Digital art is work made with digital technology or presented on digital technology. This includes images done completely on a computer or hand-drawn images scanned into a computer and finished using software programs.
See the fact file below for more information on the Digital Art or alternatively, you can download our 20-page Digital Art worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
DEFINITION AND DEVELOPMENT
- Following the development of a computerized paint program in the 1980s, Harold Cohen pioneered the concept of digital arts. He was an engineer whose work defined the first generation of computer-generated art.
- This program was soon named AARON, a robotic machine designed to make large drawings on sheets of paper placed on the floor. His system is one of the longest-running, continually maintained AI systems in history.
- Later, the impact of digital technology brought painting, drawing, sculpture, and music/sound art into newer platforms involving net art, digital installation art, and virtual reality, and these became recognized artistic practices.
- This allowed artists to digitally manipulate still images and cut and paste within moving images to create visual collages and effects.
- Artists also began to produce using sources of electronic information and programs to create their work.
- Some digital art has also become interactive, allowing the audience a certain amount of control over the final image.
- Nowadays, arts can be purely computer-generated or taken from other sources, such as a scanned photograph or image drawn using vector graphics software with a mouse or graphics tablet.
TYPES OF DIGITAL ART
- Digital photography – The artist uses a digital or conventional camera to take the best images. The photographs are then digitized and translated to the computer, and the artist uses image editing and special effects software.
- Digital installations – Usually 3D, and can be interactive, i.e. responding to visitors’ input, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
- Algorithmic art – A form of digital art including the use of mathematics. This process is created using an autonomous system of computer algorithms.
- Datamoshing – A process where media files (videos) are manipulated to produce the desired visual effects or images when the file is decoded.
- Dynamic painting – The art or picture is painted by a computer, an autonomous system, with minimal physical labor of the human artist used to complete the work.
- 2D computer graphics – Derived from 2D models like texts and digital images, it transforms traditional forms of art into digital art used in animation for the media and entertainment industries.
- 3D computer graphics – Created using 3D representations of geometric data for rendering images and most commonly used for computer animation and video game graphics.
- Pixel art – Isometric and non-isometric digital creation of images at the pixel level.
- Photo painting – Involves creating a painting inspired by a photograph as it brings together paint and image editing software to add more details and expression.
- Digital collage – Different textures and ideas are taken from several sites and then brought together in one picture.
- 2D digital painting – The process of painting on a tablet and creating artwork digitally on a computer, commonly used in animation, illustration, and 2D game art.
- 3D digital painting – Extra effects can be incorporated into the illustration texturing methods so you can see how the texture looks on your model in real time.
- Manual vector drawing – This is art made up of points, lines, and curves based on mathematical equations, rather than solid colored square pixels.
- Integrated art – This is a combination of more than one form of art using more than one media or even multiple software on the same artwork in order to achieve one single piece of art.
- Raster painting – Also known as bitmap or grid painting, each color and line is registered on the digital canvas pixel by pixel.
KNOWN DIGITAL ARTISTS
- David McLeod is a digital artist specializing in CGI (computer-generated imagery), images filmmakers use to create lifelike special effects in movies and still imagery.
- Erik Johansson is a photographer who combines his finished photos into one image. None of his works are computer-generated.
- Hal Lasko is known as “The Pixel Painter” who uses Microsoft Paint software.
- Other digital artists include Sara Ludy, Aiste Stancikaite, Jason Naylor, Nik Ainley, Sean Charmatz, Alberto Seveso, and Stephen McMennamy.
