Key Facts & Information
Zodiac Signs
- The order of the astrological signs is Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The concept of the zodiac originated in Babylonian astrology and was later influenced by Hellenistic culture.
- Zodiac is a belt around the skies that extends 9 degrees (9°) on either side of the sphere, the plane of Earth‘s orbit, and the Sun‘s apparent annual course. It is used in astrology and astronomy. The Moon‘s orbit and the orbits of the major planets both completely encircle the zodiac.
- Each of the zodiac’s 12 astrological signs is thought to occupy 1/12 (or 30°) of its vast round.
- The ancient Greeks termed the ecliptic’s zone zōdiakos kyklos, “circle of animals,” or ta zōdia, “the small animals,” because the majority of the constellations it travels through are animal representations.
- To show their symbolic significance, the zodiac might be grouped. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer are the first four signs that comprise the group of personal signs. The group of interpersonal signs is composed of the following four signs: Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio. Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, are the final four signs of the zodiac, which comprise the transpersonal signs.
Elements of Zodiac Signs
- Each of the zodiac signs is ruled by an element: water, fire, earth, or air. Each element is characterized by different strengths and tendencies, so it is crucial to consider them when we consider our signs.
Fire Signs
- Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Their traits are fiery, passionate, hostile, lively, impulsive, spontaneous, inventive, and brave. They are also capable of being conceited and haughty. They are capable of taking chances. They have the ability to take advantage of opportunities. Nobody can rule over them.
Earth Signs
- Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. They are practical, trustworthy, rational, generous, and grounded. They are capable of solving any issue. They give a lot of effort and are highly responsible. They are devoted to their partners and loyal to them. They occasionally exhibit dullness and materialism.
Air Signs
- Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. They are master communicators, sociable, curious, and attention seekers. People with air signs are multitaskers, daring, adventurous, prefer to double-check everything, and are very perceptive. They may also be chilly and impractical.
Water Signs
- Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Their traits are great sensitivity, nurturing, coolness, and sharpness. They steer clear of conflicts. These are the fundamental characteristics of the water sign.
Qualities of the Zodiac Signs
- Every sign of the zodiac is attached to a quality: cardinal, mutable, or fixed. These qualities play uniquely essential roles in the world, and it’s good to have a balance of them on any team.
- Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn
- Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius
- Mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces
Twelve Astrological Signs
Aries (Ram): March 21 – April 19
- The brightest star in Aries, named Hamal (Arabic for “sheep”), is not particularly bright. Its depiction as a ram is linked to the Egyptian deity Amon and the ram with the golden fleece from Greek mythology.
Taurus (Bull): April 20 – May 20
- Aldebaran, also known as Alpha Tauri and the brightest star in the constellation, is the 14th brightest star in the sky. Its name means “the follower” in Arabic. Its representation as a bull has a connection to the Greek myth about Zeus, who took the form of a bull to take Europa.
Gemini (Twins): May 21 – June 20
- The stars Castor and Pollux are its brightest stars. The brighter of the two is Pollux, the seventeenth brightest star in the sky. Twins are used to symbolizing it (or in Egyptian astrology by a pairing of goats and in Arabian astrology by a pairing of peacocks).
Cancer (Crab): June 21 – July 22
- It includes the well-known Praesepe (sometimes known as the Beehive). Al Tarf, which is Arabic for “the end” (of a crab leg), was its brightest star. Its depiction as a crab is related to the crab that Heracles was pinched by while battling the Lernaean hydra in Greek mythology.
Leo (Lion): July 23 – August 22
- The Sickle is an asterism formed by many of the stars in Leo. Its brightest star is Regalus, which is Latin for “little king.” The Nemean lion killed by Heracles is frequently associated with its representation as a lion.
Virgo (Virgin): August 23 – September 22
- Spica (Latin for “head of grain,” also known as Alpha Virginis), the brightest star in the constellation, is the fifteenth brightest star in the sky. It represents a young woman carrying a bundle of wheat. She is alternatively referred to as the harvest maiden or a fertility goddess.
Libra (Balance): September 23 – October 22
- Its brightest star is Zubeneschamali, also known as Beta Librae, which is Arabic for “northern claw” because it was once believed to be a part of the constellation Scorpius. It is represented by a female figure holding a balancing scale, sometimes identified as Astraea, the Roman goddess of justice.
Scorpio (Scorpion): October 23 – November 21
- Antares (Alpha Scorpii), its brightest star, is the fifteenth brightest star in the sky. Its name is a translation of the Greek for “Ares’ rival.” Its representation as a scorpion is connected to the Greek myth about the scorpion that killed Orion by biting him. Scorpio is also the most common zodiac sign among Americans.
Sagittarius (Archer): November 22 – December 21
- Kaus Australis, which means “bow” in Arabic and “south” in Latin, is its brightest star. Either a centaur shooting a bow and arrow or an arrow drawn across a bow is used to represent it.
Capricorn (Goat): December 22 – January 19
- One theory for the fishtail appearance with which the goat is commonly connected with the Greek myth of Pan, who jumped into the sea to escape the monster Typhon just as he was changing into an animal shape. The upper half assumed the shape of a goat, while the tail’s lower half assumed the form of a fish.
Aquarius (Water Bearer): January 20 – February 18
- Sadalmelik, which translates to “the lucky stars of the king” in Arabic, is its brightest star. It has been proposed that the reason why it is shown a man pouring water from a jug is since in the past when Aquarius rose in the Middle East, there were floods and heavy rains.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
- Pisces is the Latin term for “Fishes.” It is one of the oldest zodiac signs known to science, with the two fish showing as early as c. 2300 BCE on the lid of an Egyptian coffin
Chinese Zodiac Signs
- The twelve animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac, or sheng xiao, represent twelve different kinds of personality kinds. Chinese zodiac animals have lucky meanings. Chinese people associate each animal with certain characteristics. It’s believed that people born in a given year have the personality of that year’s animal.
