- Its name came from the Alabama tribe, one of the Native American tribes in the area. It’s also known as the heart of Dixie (a nickname for southern states) where 70 percent of its land is covered in forest. Aside from timber, Alabama is rich in limestone, coal and iron ore, which are raw materials in making steel.
- Nicknamed the “Heart of Dixie”, Alabama joined the Union as the 22nd state in 1819. The state’s present economy is centered on aerospace, agricultural, automobile production and the service sector.
- Spanish explorers first arrived in the 1500s and Alabama was then controlled at different times by England, France and Spain. The U.S. finally signed it over in 1795 through the Treaty of San Lorenzo.
- In the 19th century, cotton and slave labor were central to the state’s economy. It played a key role in the American Civil War where its capital, Montgomery, was the Confederacy’s first capital.
