New Mexico is a state located in the southwestern and western regions of the United States. It is usually considered one of the Mountain States. - New Mexico’s total area is 121,412 square miles wherein it borders Oklahoma to the east, Colorado at the north, and west of Texas. Its landscape is a mixture of sandy desert, pastoral plain, minimal bodies of water except the Rio Grande, heavy forest, and rocky mountains. The climate varies from sunny and dry: winters rather brief, but definite cool to colder.
- The first native inhabitants were the Paleo-Indians with Clovis culture. The name Nw Mexico came from Nuevo Mexico or New Spain in 1563 after the seeking of gold mines by Francisco de Ibarra after the exploration. Santa Fe located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains was established in 1608 but later abandoned for 12 years by the Spaniards due to the Pueblo Revolt.
- In 1848, after the victory of the Americans during the Mexican-American war they ceded the territory under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This included some territories like California and the rights of the citizens to vote.
- By January 6, 1912, New Mexico became the 47th state accepted to the union as a separate territory. The economic prosperity came in after the oil discovery in 1928 in Lea County and the town of Hobbs named after a homesteader.
- As of 2015 the estimated population of New Mexico was 2,085,109. Half of the residents are born in New Mexico while the other half are from the other states along with minimal non-American people.
- Economically, manufacturing industries support the state with food products, chemicals, transportation equipment, and stone-lay products. While more than half of the economy comes from livestock production, specifically dairy and cattle. Crops such as pecans, hay, onions, corn, peanuts, beans, chillies, and lettuce are grown.
- Some of its famous citizens are Conrad Hilton (hotel executive), Georgia O’Keefe (artist), Demi Moore (actress), Ernie Pyle (journalist), Billy the Kid (outlaw), John Denver (singer), and Al Unser (auto racer).
