EVENTS
- 1833 – Andrew Jackson becomes the first US President to ride a train.
- 1844 – The YMCA is founded.
- 1872 – Pioneering feminist Susan B. Anthony was fined for voting in a presidential election at Rochester, New York. After voting rights had been granted to African-American males by the 15th Amendment, she attempted to extend the same rights to women. She led a group of women that voted illegally, to test their status as citizens. She was arrested, tried and sentenced to pay $100, which she refused. Following her death in 1906 after five decades of tireless work, the Democratic and Republican parties both endorsed women’s right to vote. In August of 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was finally ratified, allowing women to vote.
- 1925 – The Chrysler Corporation is founded.
- 1930 – Frozen food is sold in retail stores for the first time. 18 stores in Springfield, Massachusetts took part in a trial to test consumer acceptance. Clarence Birdseye, the founder of the Birds Eye Frozen Food Company, is considered to be the father of the modern frozen food industry.
- 1944 – The Battle of Normandy, or D-Day, begins.
- 1946 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) is founded. The NBA, which comprises teams in the United States and Canada, is considered the world’s premier men’s professional basketball league.
- 1978 – By a vote of almost two to one, California voters approved Proposition 13, an amendment to the state constitution severely limiting property tax rates.
- 1982 – Israeli forces invade Lebanon. The 1982 Lebanon War was triggered by the attack on Israeli ambassador, Shlomo Argov, in London on June 3. Thousands of civilians died during the war, which lasted three years.
- 1984 – The video game Tetris is published. Russian computer engineer, Alexey Pajitnov, created the puzzle game. With over 100 million copies sold, it is one of the most successful video games in history.
